Something unanticipated happened when I wrote about the movie Xanadu for LeisureSuit.net--freaks and weirdoes came out of the woodwork to honor what I thought was a campy, long-forgotten teen flick from my teen years. Many of those responding were either small children, or sometimes not even born when the movie came out in 1980. "Why on earth would anyone champion this movie?" I asked myself.

And it got me thinking--it's time to do a general overview of my cult favorites from the 70's. Why now? Just for the hell of it, and because I'd better do it now before I forget most of this stuff. Please understand: there are literally thousands of movies one could fit into this category, from the completely obscure, to major-studio releases that have either fallen by the wayside or were never big hits to begin with. This article is in no way meant as a quantitative overview--if it were qualitative, I wouldn't even be doing it. It's simply meant as a chance for me to recall many of the off-kilter movies of the 70's that have stuck with me, and many that I have tracked down over the years, some in the wonderful used bins of various Manhattan video stores.

The only constant? I can't think of anything profoundly sociological to impart here--like the 70's, this article is a great big mess. The only constant is that a vast majority of these movies were shown five times a day on Home Box Office. Back then, HBO only showed "really bad" movies five times a day, usually in the morning , late-night and afternoon. I'd turn on HBO by chance on a summer's day and bark, "Oh, shit, they're showing Over the Edge again."

If only I'd known that that would be the last time I'd see some of these movies. I'm not sure if VCR's existed back then (these were the days of Beta), and even if they had, there was no damn way my father could afford one, as getting HBO was enough of a financial stretch. If not for HBO, I would not have known many of these movies, as they came and went in a flash in theaters, not to mention I was too young for some of the R-rated selections. As for the inclusion of early-80's movies and far fewer movies in the early 70's, this was due to two things: 1) my age, as I was a small child in the early 70's and not really up on cult movies; and 2) every decade tends to have a spill-over effect, i.e., trends that were big at the end of one will not stop cold as a new decade begins. Thus, there were a ton of early 80's movies that feel now like 70's movies.

There will be plenty of movies I have missed (some on purpose) and even a few here which aren't typically cult movies, but somehow have that feel now. So, sit back and enjoy, whether this dredges up memories or seems like a foreign language.

Bless the Beasts and the Children (1971)
Director: Stanley Kramer
Starring: Bill Mumy, Barry Robins, Miles Chapin

This is an odd flick about a bunch of misfit kids in Arizona who take it upon themselves to save a buffalo herd set for slaughter--with disastrous results for one of the gang. This movie is notable for three key contributions: 1) the groovy theme song by the then red-hot Carpenters; 2) use of the song "Nadia's Theme," which went on to be the theme for the soap opera The Young and the Restless and a massive mid-70's hit. (That wasn't its title then--the piece got its name when ABC used the music for stories on Romanian gymnast Nadia Comenici while she piled up gold-medal performances in the 1976 Olympics.) And 3) Bill Mumy got to strut his stuff outside the environs of his hit show, "Lost in Space". Overall, a pretty hackneyed, awful movie, but it brought many a tear to teenage iconoclasts' eyes at the time.

The sequel, boasting of Michael Jackson's Oscar-nominated, Golden Globe-winning theme song. (We couldn't find a picture of the original.)
Willard (1971)
Director: Daniel Mann
Starring: Bruce Davison, Ernest Borgnine, Elsa Lanchester, Sondra Locke

Willard is like The Blob with rats instead of oozing goo. Willard, as played by Bruce Davison, is a momma's boy who lets everyone push him around, including Al Martin (played by pretty boy Ernest Borgnine), who runs Willard's late father's business. What no one knows: Willard has two rats for friends that he names Ben and Socrates. They live with him in his mother's run-down mansion. (And, as we find out later, Ben and Socrates are quite the gadflies and have scores of rat friends hiding out in the mansion.) When Willard's mother dies, Martin flies into a rage and kills Socrates, which devastates Willard, not to mention Ben, who, with a little help from his friends, treats Martin like Swiss cheese. Willard is not to be confused with its lesser sequel, Ben, which had a dynamite theme song courtesy of a pre-nutjob Michael Jackson.

Billy Jack (1971)/The Trial of Billy Jack (1974)
Director: Tom Laughlin
Starring: Tom Laughlin, Delores Taylor

If you're looking for true early 70's rebellion, Billy Jack was it. Billy, as portrayed by Tom Laughlin, was a rebel ex-Green Beret, half-Indian who lived in the hills outside of a "hippie" school run out West by Taylor, who had that earth-mother vibe down perfectly and, naturally, was in love with Billy, along with all her fawning, highly-dysfunctional students, who were all hot tail in that Karen Valentine way. (Karen Valentine, object of my first few hard-ons along with Julie Newmar as Catwoman on Batman, was one of the leads in the TV series Room 222.)

The movie is a bit confused, but the confusion is essential to Billy's character--whether to strive for peace in a violent world, or use violence against those who clearly don't want peace. There are plenty of cool kung fu action sequences where Billy kicks major redneck ass. (When he takes his big, black cowboy hat off, sighs and starts rubbing his face, look out.) Much wacky spiritual stuff ensues, including Billy's snake dance, where he lets rattlesnakes bite him as part of an ancient Indian purification rite. The scenes between the uptight town folk and the wild hippie kids are priceless. (Watch for a young Howard "WKRP in Cincinnati" Hesseman as part of the goofy hippie acting troupe.) The sequel is more of the same--and made Laughlin a mint at the time.

Theatre of Blood (1973)
Director: Douglas Hickox
Starring: Vincent Price, Diana Rigg

Price plays Edward Lionheart, an over-the-top Shakespearean actor who had his career killed by numerous bad reviews and appeared to commit suicide by jumping from the veranda of one of those critic's luxury apartments . . . only to resurface years later with an outcast group of hippies and street trash, with the sole purpose of killing off his critics via various Shakespearean murder scenes. This is Vincent Price at his best--casting subtlety to the wind and over-acting his ass off. There's an odd glitter rock feel to this movie, as it took place in London right when Bowie and T. Rex were kicking in. In his own way, this is Price's warped stab at rock stardom, and he makes it.

Mean Streets (1973)
Director: Martin Scorcese
Starring: Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel

This movie is too big to be a cult favorite. But it's notable for one key element in terms of cult flicks: the use of identifiable rock music in the soundtrack in lieu of usually less-vivid background music. This was where it all began, whether it was the one-two punch of the Rolling Stones' "Tell Me" and "Jumping Jack Flash" in the bar scene where we first see Johnny Boy, or the brilliant use of "Please Mr. Postman" in the pool-hall fight scene. This was exciting stuff as the music perfectly suited the action, and no one had the bright idea to do this before. It would play an integral role in weaving popular music into movies, to the point now where soundtracks are often either far too intrusive, or occasionally better than their movies.

That'll Be the Day/Stardust (1973/74)
Director: Claude Watham/Michael Apted
Starring: David Essex

That'll Be the Day is sort of a British American Graffiti in that it sets out to define England in the late 50's, as American rock music is tearing up the charts. Rather than having fun, though, David Essex plays Jim Maclaine, a young boy who drops out of school to work in a seaside holiday camp with, of all people, Ringo Starr, who actually did do the kind of menial chores (running bumper cars and Ferris wheels) portrayed in the movie. (It's worth the rental price just to see Ringo in mutton chops and cheap period duds playing miniature golf.) It's a gray, ugly British film, but perfect in the way it nails the mundanity of British working-class life at the time, and how much of a jolt rock was in that context. The movie ends with Maclaine dumping his young wife and child (as his World War II-bound father had done at the movie's start) to buy a guitar in a pawn shop.

Stardust is the sequel, and currently unavailable on video. My memory is vague on it, but I recall the Essex character becoming a massive superstar, only to flame out on drugs and ego trips once he ditches his band and turns into the lonely genius. Whereas That'll Be the Day essayed late-50's England, Stardust set out to document a rock star's rise to fame in the 60's and subsequent flame-out in the 70's. Keith Moon appears in both movies, and as far as I'm concerned you can ditch Tommy and The Wall as rock-idol movies of choice in favor of Stardust--if only you could find it anywhere.

Hi everyone!
I'm looking for a movie i saw 10-15 years ago and it was already old so it must be from the 80s..
So the basic story is:A bunch of teenagers that go to school and then comes a new girl..She starts hanging out with a girl and they become friends..The friend is with a guy,the cool-tough guy, but he starts liking the new girl and they end up together..
I remember some spesific scenes such as the scene quite at the end of the movie where the "cool" guy is having a battle with the bad guy of who jumps further with the rollerblades and the cool guy wins..The scene takes part at a stadium where you go to rollerblade with music(i dont know how you call that!!)..
Theres also a scene where the couple goes into a machine that makes the small photos and they make funny faces...
I hope someone knows cause it's been driving me crazy many years!!

thanks to all who answered this, however, the show I am thinking of was NOt Hilarious House of Frightenstein. The show I am talking about did not have skits in between nor do I remember the other 'cast". I looked at the episode that Allen talked about on netflix, and definitely was not this show. But thanks anyway. Hopefully someone else will remember it. Or, maybe I really am crazy

I remember this plot very well. Only it was an early episode of the original 60s twilight zone. I don't remember the title of the episode but it was with a very young John Cassavettes as the escaped convict.

Man, I haven't thought of Hillarious House of Frightenstein until I just saw the title mentioned here. I loved that show as a kid. I remember it being on very late, on Fridays I think. I remember almost falling asleep but forcing myself to stay awake for it. Vincent Price always read a goulish poem at the beginning and at the end of the show.
I ordered a copy of a disc from this series on Netflix. I was surprised they had it.

i remember this movie from when i was young, it might have been something my parents rented or a tv movie, i watched it in the 80's but could have been a 70's film, it was i think similiar animation to that used in the Wall, sometimes bordering on claymation or something, about this town where the people are getting taken over by something, becoming like robots. i remember them walking back from wherever they went and theyre different, dont know if they look different or just hypnotized or something, a couple of kids who arent affected by this find that there parents are one of these others (aliens? robots?)... iremember being so haunted by it but have no idea what it was or how to better describe it. it had kind of a dismal color quality to it, if that makes sense.

I only remember that on fridays, the had someone called the librarian, an old man in like Merlin esque robe with long white hair and beard walking past cobwebby, mad scientist like bookshelf with bubbling flasks and various other things. Hello Just looking to find the name of a really bad movie I remember watching one night when I was little. This is what I remember:
I think it was set either at a college dorm or maybe some kind of boarding school for highschool aged students. Most of the people getting killed were cheerleaders. I remember one cheerleader who loved cookies and milk got drowned in a bathtub full of them. One character got killed by having a megaphone shoved through their chest. I remember the killer was killing them because in the end it turns out that he always wanted to be a cheerleader but his father thought it would make him too girly or something like that. It was a very cheesy movie but now it's driving me crazy to not know what the title is.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone might be able to give me!

A 'film' or TV drama that I saw as a child in the late 70's or very early 80's keeps coming into my mind. Details I recall are minimal. I remember lots of children, dressed in white robes in a kind of 'heaven'. The 'earth' children who were visiting them were told they were children 'yet to be born'. They then met a little girl who they were told would be their sister one day - but none of them would remember the day they met - the whole thing was very 'odd'! Can anyone out there help? I remember seeming a movie when I was young (an 80’s or maybe a 90’s movie). I'm sorry but I only remember a few things about it. What I can remember was that it had a small group of bad men, and a few bad women with them too, all doing drugs and drinking all sorts of alcohol. They end up kidnapping a little girl (I can’t remember how, I think they had a van and kidnapped her off the street), she was around the age of 7 or 8 (I think). They take her to an apartment building where they’re staying and lock her up in one of the rooms in the back, where she ends up being raped by them. She’s very naïve, thinking that they’re going to take her back to her mother, always saying “When am I going to see mommy?”, promising her that she’ll see her mother soon (which she believes). It seems that they sell the little girl to some other bed people and rape her too (still believing that she’ll be taken to her mother). That’s all I can remember, I think that the process of selling the little girl goes on and on, while her parents keep searching for her. Does anyone know this movie?

Okay. I'm going to take another crack at describing this 70s or very early 80s movie that is torturing me since I don't remember much and don't know the title:
I remember a group of people hiding together in some kind of structure, possibly industrial. It may be in the desert. An erie flute plays in the background. Outside, a sinister messiah-like man lurks calmly. He may be the source of the music. I am not sure.
There is a stucture on a hill that occassionally begins to glow with a throbbing light and makes a surging humming noise.
The people seem to be hiding because people keep going missing. Anyone who ventures out of hiding never comes back. Is the sinister man an alien leading people to another world? or is he an abductor?
I seem to remember an encounter between a girl who leaves the shelter and this messiah-like man. She fails to return.
This may be a made for tv movie or just a B movie.
Does this ring a bell with anyone. Please save my sanity.

I believe this was an adult Rated R cartoon movie during during the late early 80's).It had a character call Vinny or Benny (leader of the Italian gang, would constantly comb hair, reminds you of the Fonz), his voice reminds me of John Travolta, then there was Crazy Shapiro (always wanting to fight or shoot somebody), Boogaloo Jackson(leader of the Black Gang), Sal(liked to slap his girlfriend around, throw her threw the car window). The Italians and the Blacks fight each other. Even thou they fight the two leaders are good friends (Vinny & Jackson). Crazy Shapiro fathers always slap him around. They box in ring and the father almost kills Crazy. Vinny or Benny the leader is really scare of Crazy but he doesn't let him know. I would really appreciate if somone knew the name ot this movie. It was on beta at the time.

For several years now I have been trying to remember a movie I saw when I was a child that scared me to death. I can only remember bits of it. The character's name of the scary man in the movie was Jake. I remember the mother getting a flower box delivered to her that supposedly had her son's arm and hand in it wearing his class ring...that is how she knew it was her son's arm. I remember that Jake was supposedly killed and put in the well, but when they checked later he wasn't there. That is about all I can remember. To this day when I hear the name Jake it triggers memories and I get the chills. Have always hated that name since. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

I don't know the name and I remember few details but here goes.
There are a group of people hiding in some remote industrial site(possibly a mining site). It seems to be in a valley or desert. There is some guy on the outside who plays a flute. He is very sinister-like a cult leader. He is like a pied piper of sorts. I seem to remember a girl leaving the shelter and encountering this guy. That's all I remember. Sorry. I have been all over the internet for hours trying to find out what the name of this movie was. I THINK it was made for tv in the 80s, but more likely the 90s. It involved a disturbed teenage boy that gets involved with drugs and delinquency. There is this one scene I remember vaguely where him and a bunch of other kids attack and smash someone or a car or something with fluorescent light bulbs in an underground parking lot I think. Something else I remember vaguely is him being in a room or an attic somewhere drawing evil or disturbing things on the wall. Can someone help me?!

Alright, so when I was younger I remember seeing a lot of late night movies on ABC. They would run these late at night and a few of them, I was too young to remember their name.

1. This one was about a disfigured man living in the woods. Some people go camping and run across this "monster". Skipping ahead to the end, he takes one of the young girls prisoner and has a child with her because all you see at the end is a cave and you hear a baby crying.

2. This one was really disconcerting. For some reason, I feel this movie was about cannibalism but I can't remember. There are these young girls in the creepy old house. One of them crouches down on the floor to an air vent that's in the floor that I suppose leads to a basement. Suddenly, someone grabs her hair and I think they give a shot of this terrifying looking man that is being kept down in the basement/cellar.

3. I doubt anyone will get this one because of my vague description. All I remember is a grand staircase in a house and an old woman. Towards the end of the movie, a woman goes out in a yellow rain coat because it's raining hard and she goes to dump a body of someone she has killed in a nearby ditch. It's late at night and raining hard. I remember most of the movie took place in the grand house.

I would appreciate it so, so, so much if anyone could give me the name of at least ONE of these films. It's been driving me crazy trying to remember.

When i was in grade school, on saturdays, they would show us movies. This movie was this scary film. It was one of those Hammer/Gothic horror films. The plot consisted of a man who lived with his mother. When ever he brought a woman to live with him, his mother would wear this white hood (it looked like a clan outfit) and kill the lady in the catacombs with this hook she would grab from the wall. She would lure them by him playing the organ in the catacombs. Well, I was bad that day and never got to see the end. I've been trying to find this movie so i could see how they caught her.

This young teen girl maybe 14ish sees him singing at the mall and developed this huge crush on him. So she set out to meet him. They meet, he liked her and of course she lies about her age. 30 years and still trying... I seen it on tv back in late 70s.I remember only a couple of scenes.1st being a woman sitting in a room with a bunch of people(i think everyone may have been elderly)as they tormented her by dangeling a pair of baby shoes in front of the fireplace. She sat there screaming and crying as the group then throws the shoes into the fire.Thay may have then began walking towards her as if to kill her when the scene blacks out(ends). The other scene is so vague its more like an image.I see a long table with a birthday cake all set up for a party. The entire table(maybe the whole room)is covered in cobwebs. No people in this image.
It may not even be a movie, but perhaps an episode from chiller theatre or something like that. Any input would be appreciated.Thanks.

I remember a film about a man & woman traveling along a freeway and finding an alien pendant and laser. If the pendant was worn then the laser could be fired. The longer it was worn the more the individual changed into an alien form, similar to the one who was pursuing them? The pendant and laser had been dropped by an alien who had just done battle with another alien and obviously wanted it back.

I saw this movie my family called " moster doll" but i'm not sure it's the title.I believe it was a late 70's movie with a semi famous actress in it.
There is a young woman who comes home to her apt and brings this little native/voodoo doll with a spear with her. She is the only actor in the movie. The doll attacks and chases her around the apt the whole time. She tries to kill the doll in the oven but it's spirit gets into her. At the end she is waiting for her mom to come and she's playing with a big knife and has long pointy teeth.
This is a great movie but i have no idea how to find it.It was only like an hour long so i assume it was made for TV. Like saturday afternoon flicks were.

All right people, I have 3 different movies I need help with...
1)the first plot is from a late 70s early 80s HBO movie. its pretty vague but all I remember is there being a boy involved with some type of adventure theme maybe goin on. I believe his parents were really crappy parents and were maybe in bath robes with the mother wearing rollers. I seem to remember that this was a very weird movie that made no sense and at the end it seems to maybe have been a dream. (not sure if this is 'time bandits')
2)this is not Demon Seed. this movie involves a blond woman living in a
house by the ocean by herself.she was lying in her bed and was seduced by an entity.when she had gotten out of the shower, there was a message written on the mirror saying 'i love you' or something to that nature. i think she tried to run away from the house to the beach and the entity seduced her there also..never seen a ghost with such an appetite for lust..lol
3)this one is really vague...i remember a man being in a space suit getting sucked up by big slimy blood colored snake looking thing on a spaceship. It was killing off the crew one by one. pretty gory. its not worms but like one big ace slimy slug...eew
If any one can help me with these titles it would be soooooo appreciated...peace n blessings

Hi I remember seeing a movie in the 80s probably on HBO about this kid that for some reason goes bald. His dad tries to glue a wig to his head but during a baseball(? I think) game it comes off and everyone starts laughing at him. He gets this recipe from somewhere that is supposed to make hair grow. He tries it and not only does it grow but grows almost faster than he can cut it off. At some point in the movie, he gets kidnapped. You come to find out that he is kidnapped by some guy who is cutting his hair and using it to make paint brushes out of. I think the paintings he makes with the paintbrushes are magical or something but I can't remember for sure. Also at some point I believe someone or some people can actually enter the paintings. I am not 100% sure though. If anyone can help me out with the name of this movie I would be eternally greatful! Thanks so much.

Mr. or Ms. Aja, you might be thinking of the dreaded movie "Koyaanisqatsi& quot;, which is a Hopi word for "life out of balance". Wikipedia has this to say: "The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse photography of cities and natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music." It features a score by the equally dreaded Philip Glass. About the best thing to say about it is that a snippet of the theme music was once played in a scene on the sitcom "Scrubs" to great effect.

A man had his family killed in a car accident by a "professional&q uot; Hit and Run driver (in a modified black car)...
So he modified a car (I seem to remember some kind of pickup truck, or 4x4 but I'm not sure) and try to find that driver, listening to the police radio.

One of the car had some metal spears (like ancient Greek chariot) coming out of its wheels to destroy other car...

Any idea ?

Thanks.

Well minus the details about the space suit, that sounds like Dr. Strangelove.

I'm trying to remember the name of a movie and no-one seems to remember it.

It's space based. Most likely in the 70's the final sceen has a man in a space suit. surfing an Iron Beam into the Atmosphere of Earth. as a sign of defiance for something.

it was referenced in Armageddon ( movie ) by Steve bushemi when he said. "this is like that movie where slim pickens rides the beam down to Earth" It's prolly right in front of me. Please help.

I remember when I was a child seeing a movie on TBS that must have came out in either the 70's or 80's. It was about this school out in the middle of nowhere, woods, and a group of people hijacked / kidnapped the school bus and the middle school aged kids. They took at gun point into the woods on the bus. They were wearing masks that either looked like cartoon characters or presidents. I can't remember. But the kids escaped and had to survive in the woods and they swam into an underwater cave or something and the people kept chasing them. That's about all I remember. I have been trying to figure out what this movie is for like 20 years. HELP!!

Ok - Here's the only thing I remember about the movie, but I have been so impressed with how you guys figure the names out, I have faith someone will remember this...
2 sisters, the younger one is spying on her older sister in the woods and she sees her rising out of a lake. I think the older sister was a witch or something... I dont remember anything else, but this one scene so clearly. If it sound familiar to anyone, please let me know! Thanks!

After years of searching for this movie you guys have brought my search to an end. Thank you very much.

I remember reading an article where Tarantino said a film inspired the "lonely grave of paula shultz" part of Kill Bill. Does anyone know what that film was? i think the title began with "The grave of..." or "The Lonely Grave of..." followed by a girl's name.
Cheers

I saw this movie probably mid 80's. Girl's living at boarding school(?) accidentally kill the old woman that ran it. They shot her in what was supposed to be a prank, her body falling backward into the pool. The girls try to cover it up, wrap her in a tarp, and throw her dead body in a dumpster. Her son(?) I believe comes to exact revenge on the girls that killed his mother(?). One scene I remember vividly is one of the girls runs into the bathroom to hide and one of the other girl's head is in the toilet.

If you know what movie thi
