Papillon (Franklin J. Schaffner, 1973):
Papillon
Steve McQueen movies are like potato chips and Turkish dominatrices--once you've had one, you just have to go back for another. In that spirit, following up last week's review of The Cincinnati Kid, I present Mr. McQueen in his last great role: Papillon.

"Papillon" is the French word for butterfly, and particularly when pronounced with a sissy French accent doesn't exactly sound like it's advertising the manliest of movies. You'd probably be more likely to pick up this film at your local video store if it had the macho title of Escape from Devil's Island. Actually, you'd probably be most likely to pick it up if it had the title Escape from Sex Kitten Island, but that title would be significantly less accurate. Papillon is, in fact, about an escape from Devil's Island, the notorious penal colony off French Guiana.

Papillon is based on the true story of a chap by the name of Henri Charriere, and, again, despite the sissy name, Charriere is no French creampuff. As portrayed by Steve McQueen, he's one tough mother, who bends but never breaks over the course of many agonizing years in the brutal French justice system. Granted, the story is based on Charriere's autobiography, so it's likely that he gave himself a little extra heaping of credit for being a tough guy, but if Charriere is even half as macho as McQueen portrays him, he deserves a steaming plaudit bouillabaisse, with some delicately-seasoned kudos au gratin on the side.

Charriere, known as "Papillon" for the butterfly tattoo on his chest, is a safecracker framed for murder and sent away to prison off French Guiana. On the boat over he becomes acquainted--in the non-buggery sense--with one Louis Dega, a counterfeiter played by Dustin Hoffman. Dega's a resourceful guy, and he's got a fortune in Francs shoved up his rectum, so he's a good friend to have. Dega can also use the protection of a tough dude (deau'd?) like Papillon, so the two become fast friends.

Once on the island, the warden lays down the rules of Papillon and Dega's new home: first escape attempt will net you two years in solitary. Second escape attempt, five years. I won't give away the story by saying how much time Papillon spends in solitary, but suffice it to say he's there long enough to develop a taste for cockroaches and caterpillars. (McQueen doesn't aim to show off by actually eating a cockroach like Nic Cage did for Vampire's Kiss, but he does put his fingers all over them, which for a squeamish guy like me is a quite sufficient display of intestinal fortitude.)

The prison stuff is all pretty harrowing, but as I mentioned before, Papillon does some escaping, so we also get treated to a visit to a leper colony, some Indiana Jones-style jungle chases, a traitorous nun, and Papillon kicking back with some 16-year-old Native chickie on a sandy beach. That makes Papillon a great adventure as well as a great prison drama.

So if you're into adventure, and drama, and that whole triumph of the spirit thing, Papillon is definitely a picture worth checking out.

<font size=4>Henri Charriere wrote 2 books. Papillon, and later 'Banco'. Banco is out of print, but look in used bookstores and you'll find it. also!!!...there was another survivor of Devil's Island. His name was Rene Belbenoit. His own memoires of Devil's Island are in the out of print book 'Dry Guillotine'.

I must say something here. There have been the odd TV program on Devil's Island, and mention of Henri Charriere possibly embellishing his story. I take great exception to those idiotic accusations. People today have no respect for truth. Charriere certainly did have a flair for telling his story. and so what? he is considered a liar because he can interest his reader? Ridiculous! The book(s) of Charriere and Belbenoit are quite believable. These events DID happen. and anyone who says different, is a moron.(and probably an american moron at that)

the truth is, that papillon was sent to devils island when he was about 35 and devils island was not the most horrible island of the three. It was actually not that bad. Ile Royale where papillon spent most of his imprisonment and the other Ile Saint-Joseph those were bad. And in his book it says he also has kids from his two wifes, from his time being in the indian tribe.

dear E. Clayton. It is never smart to post an email looking for a tour guide like this! Particuarly that area of the world. It is best to get a friend to contact a friend etc. Almost like asking for good references.
British Guiana became Guyana when it became independent. I am not sure if it reverted to the old pronounciation .. I can't imagine that the Amerindians had a written language. So one can assume that what is written is an interpretation (sp?) of the sound of it -- which in all probability, varies dependending on the listener's nationality. If you are french then maybe you say "Gwaeeyana" ; and British, maybe "Guy+anna" .

Indeed, you're correct. While the spelling in French is Guyane Francais, most atlases (and the US State Department, significantly) translate the name of the country as "French Guiana", perhaps to distinguish it from its close neighbor Guyana, or perhaps just to confuse those of us with an insufficient knowledge of South American geography.

Of course it's spelled French Guyana all over the place (hell, I did a search on Altavista and found over 11,000 instances on the Web), so I don't feel *too* incorrect.

But being formally educated (where did you get the idea you need a formal education to Senior Edit a *Webzine*??) I'll certainlly fix it in order to be as correct as possible.

Thanks for the input.

As a Senior Editor, I can only assume you're formally educated. How sad that your ignorance shines so brightly when you refer to the country as "French Guyana." Guyana is an Amerindian word meaning "Land of Many Waters." The country to which you so ignorantly referred is French Guiana.

As for how I feel about French "culture" (note the quotes), I'll leave that aside. I'm more interested in the delicious irony of a Frenchman accusing an American of stinking ... maybe you do have a sense of humor after all! Vive le French!
