I was a little concerned when I learned that one of my favorite directors, Steven Soderbergh (whose last picture was The Limey), was making a big-studio, us-against-them courtroom drama. Apparently, he was concerned too. His film, Erin Brockovich, is indeed about us po' folk taking on an uncaring system (as Albert Finney quips, "David versus Goliath plus Goliath's whole family"), yet it stays unique because it keeps its focus human. There's maybe two minutes of screen time set in a courtroom, the remaining one hundred and twenty-nine are spent with characters.

At its center is the very Ms. Brockovich of the title. Played here exquisitely by Julia Roberts, in a role that shows intelligence, warmth and grace under pressure. Looking over her credits, I'm stunned to realize that I've only twice before spent money to see one of her films in a theater (Everyone Says I Love You and The Player, if you were curious.) I s'pose I've never had that much interest in America's Sweetheart. My ignorance of her range and genuine superstar quality made Erin an even further delight than perhaps it was designed to be. As her co-stars Albert Finney and Aaron Eckhart fell in love with her, I was right there with them.

Every step of the way with Roberts is famed costume designer Jeffrey Kurland, pulling out the same tricks he did for Mia Farrow fifteen years back in Broadway Danny Rose. As will be pointed out in such fine publications as "Us" and "The Star," Ms. Roberts makes ample use of, shall we say, her physicality in this role. "They're called boobs, Ed," she tells Finney, when he asks incredulously how she got copies of classified documents.

While it sounds like a typical Hollywood answer to a ridiculous premise, Erin Brockovich opens with a "based on a true story" crawl. The first reel of the picture does everything to confirm this, as we glimpse Erin's pre-Class Action heroine life. Like too many women Hollywood doesn't make films about, her chief concern is to keep her three kids fed and unbitten by roaches. Tough to do when your two ex-husbands are deadbeats. Tougher still when you have no diploma or specific skills. What Erin does have in spades is street smarts--enough so to realize that it'll take a big break to ever get her luck turned around.

Her break comes shockingly, and literally, during an eerie title sequence care of the brilliant D.P. Ed Lachman's use of spooky filters and composer Thomas (cousin of Randy) Newman's minimalist non-orchestral score. By a twisted turn of stranger-than-fiction logic, Erin winds up wearing her see-through halter tops and hot pants as the newest office assistant in the law firm of one Ed Masry, played winningly by the great Albert Finney. Doing their best to avoid the Mary Richards/Lou Grant dynamic (and failing miserably in a welcomed denouement) Masry is upfront that Brockovich's position is given to her solely out of pity. Brockovich is too good of a parent to deny it.

She's also too good of a parent to leave her kids with that sketchy babysitter who stinks of chicken fat, and starts leaving the kids with her new, freaky next door neighbor, George. George is played by Aaron Eckhart, best remembered as the bigger of the two bastards in Neil Labute's fabulous black comedy In The Company of Men. He plays a Mr. Mom-ish saint here, willing to give up running with his Harley gang for the love of a good woman and her delightful kids. That the good woman is a former Miss Wichita couldn't hurt either. Eckhart's George is very much the "woman" in the relationship, ignored, maybe even taken advantage of. That the film doesn't treat this as the first time a man has been in this position is further testament to its virtue.

Anyway, once at Masry's firm, Erin Brockovich uncovers an evil A Civil Action-style conspiracy. I expected the film to go downhill from here (you know, once a plot got introduced) but, strangely, I found myself surprisingly engaged. While much of it, I'm sure, had to do with Roberts' well-featured gazongas (as well as her really super hair) I was touched by the story for reasons similar to those in the forward-motion of the plot. I'll explain:

In order to "beat the baddies," Albert Finney, as well as the hired big-gun lawyers played by Peter Coyote and Veanne Cox (who is absolutely brilliant in the Bebe Neuwirth role) have to get the real scoop out of "regular people." As altruistic as Finney may be, Erin has better luck at getting the job done because she is "one of them." While this may sound corny or even demeaning to the blue collar subjects, it is certainly not the filmmakers' intent, nor is that the way it comes out. Rarely do we see real people's concerns displayed in a Hollywood film so righteously. Rarer still do we see rural characters, even some with (gasp!) drawling accents, to have anything resembling half a brain. It was this chancy plot turn that kept me engaged. Indeed, this may be the most radically stereotype-bashing film since last year's Three Kings. Still, much like that film, it does take the regular white folks to come in and save the day . . . but what are ya gonna' do?

So, does Erin Brockovich fit in with Steven Soderbergh's body of work? I say yes, in that I've come to discover that Mr. Soderbergh, much like the great Billy Wilder, doesn't really have a clear-cut directorial stamp, other than the stamp of high quality. Soderbergh has yet to make anything other than an insightful, cleverly told film, and he's done it in nearly every genre. With Erin Brockovich, he's got the Capra-esque story told, now let's all keep our fingers crossed and hopes he gets back to the neo-Godard work of "Schizopolis."

He and Roben have both been asleep!
To be accousted and poorly treated in a nursing home is a very serious issue.
Especiaolly when it is prescribed by her son who never cared about what happened for ten years before know.

But now what's to show up in some fashion but Love at last.
Hopefully Erin will show up in place of Dr. Phil who apprently'
has no interest in the elderly.

After going through 30 doctor's I've gathered important information and personal proof about food & water. There is a lot of information if you just do some resarch and add some commom sence. I share my experience all the time. I just wish some day the american people would come together to clean up the quality of our food & water. I have seen organic family's enjoy the benefit's of healthy food & water. For myself 20 years ago was the last time I experienced a cold or flu. I can get a little technical and share satistics but the solution is simply this eat organic food and drink purified water.

I was a mother of three children and lived in a small town in Nebr. April 9th of 1997 my home burned down, I had insurance with American Family insurnce company, they denied me the claim the thought I had started it, I at the time was going to college at the college 30 miles away, and the kids were in school. We lost everything,and when we move up to Greeley NE. to live next to my parents to try and start again.The company origanaly rented use furniture , that is for two weeks, without any notice they came to the house on day (Saturday) and they said they were there to get the rental property, that I was being denied the claim, I tried to stop them and they said they would get the law and I was scared so I let them as me and my three kids watched they dumped our cloths on the floor, put the food on the counters and took our beds, it was Saturday and no one to call, I had no money, so I borrowed money from my folks and hired and attorney, it has been in court and trew out, we apealed and went back to court and the jury said I was inocent, but here I sit still have no money and just getting by, The problem is I'm out of money for the attorney, but I still go lots of fight and I have contacted our senators and congress people, I have went and sat on the twolocal TV stations door step, and I'm not giving up, mainly because I want what is rightfully mine, but I have found out so much about this insurance company and that they deny 82% of there claims, I have traveled and met many families, that have stories as awful as mine and some worse, Erin I need some help and Direction Please Please help me Thanks Patti McManus P.O. I still have a few letters that have not been answered. I will not stop until I have the truth. I need to find her for real she is getting ready to do another lawsuit up by Kettleman city California.
My husbands family lived in Avenal a town near there his Grandfather was there in the early 40,s his dad grew up there.
Please anyone with information. This is a real concern for our family as some have already died from cancer years ago. My husband Ironically also worked there tearing down cooling Towers which were water towers highly contaminated for a year and a half.
He gets rashes and has had other symptoms. My husband was forman of the jobs my brother worked with him and gets swelling in his body. How can I find out where her Lawyers are that are working on her new case?? Thank you so much.

I saw the movie this afternoon and absolutely loved it! Julia Roberts is wonderful...even with the push up bras and foul language (which by the way made the character somehow more real). Her co-star (not sure who he is) was wonderful and they brought out the best and the worst in one another's character. I'd like to know more about the real Erin. My friend and I enjoyed this film and did not mind spending $9.00 to watch this movie on a Friday night. It was very funny and keep us entertained and wanting to see it again. I like the charachter she (Julia Roberts) played.
I like the character of Erin Brockvich...strong, hard working, and not going to take any crap from anyone...also like that she dishes out too. Can't wait until it comes out on video, because I do plan to purhcase it...

Saw the film today, and your review is perfect. One comment, even though I try to find films without violence or language, this film called for the language. I don't think Julia Roberts could have portrayed Ms. Brockovich's personality without it. Even though it had the strong language, I would say it was tastefully done!

Well, I agree this is a movie to see. But I would suggest that you check out the latest issue of Newsweek Magazine and/or U.S.News, you may learn that the movie is based on a real single mother paralegal/private investigator who did in fact discovered water pollution leading to a huge class-action law suit which settled for a record number. So if sometimes the movie seemed stranger-then-fiction, well, its because truth is often just that, stranger then fiction. Tata....
