Original Movie Soundtrack Rerelease
First, a disclosure: Footloose the movie is what made me want to be a professional dancer. Fortunately, that life's ambition didn't last much past the movie theatre parking lot, and thus dance fans have been spared a lot of unnecessary gaping and throwing of Playbills. But the point is, it was with high expectations that I went to see "Footloose", the new Broadway musical, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

My first disappointment was when I learned a couple of days before the show that "Footloose" the musical wasn't going to be set in the 80's. For me Footloose was the quintessential 80's film, and my date and I had been all ready to show up in traditional 80's garb: for her, leg warmers and a bra over her blouse, and for me . . . I don't know, I guess leg warmers also--I don't really remember what I wore through most of the 80's, but I'm pretty sure it was torn, whatever it was.

Sure enough, "Footloose" is more or less set in the present day, and the story is familiar from the movie. Kid by the name of Ren from the big city of Chicago ends up in a small town where dancing, along with just about anything else that's any fun, is illegal. And so he's got to fight the local minister and plead with the town council for the high school kids' right to throw a school dance and, dammit, cut loose a little.

Of course those who know the film well will recall that Ren never actually gets permission to hold a dance in town, but that doesn't stop the kids from strutting their stuff and demonstrating that, for a bunch of teens who have never danced a day in their lives, they sure have some pretty fancy innate moves. "Footloose" the musical simplifies things a bit, has a more traditional ending, and has dropped some of the subplots (fans will be disappointed that the great jump-from-your-seat fight scene at the end, where the mean ex-boyfriend Chuck Cranston gets his comeuppance, has inexplicably been excised).

But of course, as in the movie, the plot of "Footloose" is secondary to the music and the dance. And the dance is really incredible. Some of the most athletic dancing I've ever seen on stage, to the point that during certain numbers my date was covering her mouth and pointing to the stage with such avidity that I thought one of the dancers had lost his headpiece. But no, she was just really impressed was all.

The songs include most of the ones from the flick, as well as a few new numbers. Of the familiar classics, "Let's Hear it for the Boy", sung by Rusty (Sarah Jessica Parker in the movie) and "Heaven Helps the Man Who Fights His Fear" or whatever that song is actually called (sung by Ren--Kevin Bacon in the movie, and here played by an energetic newcomer, Jeremy Kushnier), are the snappiest numbers and had the whole audience grinning and cheering ecstatically. Of the new songs, the only two that stand out are "Mama Says", sung by Willard Hewitt (a role owned by Chris Penn in the movie, but beautifully co-opted here by one Tom Plotkin) and "Dancing is Not a Crime," which is a goofy musicalized version of the goofy speech Ren makes before the town council ("and he leapt and danced before God!" Remember that?)--I really dug it. The song I was most looking forward to, "Holding out for a Hero", was presented rather lamely as Ariel singing to the audience. That's a great song and should have knocked the roof off the house, but alas.

So if there's so much good stuff here, what is keeping "Footloose" from being a great musical? The fact that it's just a lot of bubble-gummy, crowd-pleasing pap? No, in my personal philosophy that works in its favor. The problem is the grown-ups. The minister and his wife (as played by John Lithgow and Dianne Wiest) were always a major part of the original Footloose. In fact, it is the minister who undergoes the most character development in the story and is thus, in many ways, the central character. But those two don't have a lot of energy, and even if they sing and even dance a little at the end, they just can't compete with the youngsters.

There were nearly half a dozen times throughout the show where a great dancing number featuring all those teens flying about in a gymnasium or someplace would wrap up, the audience what be wild with enthusiasm and applause, and then that damn kitchen set would roll back out on to the stage, and the minister and his wife, or Ren's mother, would come out, and you could hear the entire audience let out a collective groan. Great, we were all thinking, another slow, boring, deliberative song about guilt, or personal responsibility, or something equally rousing.

I believe that somewhere in previews some of the adults' numbers were cut out of the show. I hate to say it, because they are talented performers up there, but even more should go. There's just too sharp a contrast of the razzle-dazzle factor, and it really drags the thing down in the aggregate.

That said, I still have to recommend it. If you're a fan of catchy music and exuberant dancing, then "Footloose" does it with more energy than pretty much anything out there right now. Just have a Pez dispenser or something handy for the slow parts. Oh, and leave the leg warmers at home.

Colonie Youth Theater will be putting on Footloose as this years summer musical. This is my first year with CYT, and since alot of my friends auditioned for it last year and we doing it again this year, i took a crack at it. My main focus on a role that i wanted was Chuck Cranston, i practiced "The Girl Gets Around" and i did very well. On the day of the audition, for my audition song i sand "No More" from Into the Woods; the musical my high school will be performing next week from today, with me as the role of the Baker. Back on track, so i sang my song, and i got a call-back. We had to do a dance that we learned there, and perform it in small groups. then we were called up in small groups to learn songs from Footloose. I was called up to sing "The Girl Gets Around" (Chuck's Song) and "I Confess" (Reverend Shaw Moore's Song). And finally, we were called up to read lines for certain people. I read for Chuck, Rev. Moore, and Willard. So i thought to myself, "aight, im either gettin Chuck or the Reverend". So i left the community center exhausted, and was told that we'd be emailed about what parts we were given in about a week. So two days later, i get a message on facebook from the director, and asked if i would like the role of Rev. Shaw Moore. I greatly accepted. oh man. this is gonna be a great show.

anyone got any tips for the role? This will be my 5th theater show in all (other shows: Little Shop of Horrors as the voice of Audrey II, High School Musical the Musical as Basketball Team, Into the Woods as the Baker, and soon to be part of the cast of Murder's in the Heir) and i still consider myself as a mediocre actor.

Thanks to all who help

We perform Footloose in 6 weeks. Being in a small school, I do everything with the show other than accompany it. I have a great lady who always plays the piano and also helps students practice vocal parts. I would love to start up a conversation with those of you who have experience with the show, both cast members and directors. This is a huge show for our high school of 200 students but I have over 60 in drama club. I want this to be the best of all the shows I have done in the past 10 years as my senior class has been some of the most dedicated. Please, please-----any advice, comments, etc. would be great! Thanks much!!!!

this spring my high school decided to put on Footloose for the first time. it's only my first year in high school and i was kinda nervous about going out for a role. as a freshman, i doubted i'd even get ensemble! but i did get a part as a high school student, and it rocks! i appear in the opening number, 'somebody's eyes', 'still rockin'/bar scene, 'lets hear it for the boy', 'i'm free/heaven help me', the town council scene, the finale, and also two random hallway scenes. it's alot of high energy dancing and singing. the other enseble role is a parishoner/adult. they don't do any dancing besides the finale, and they mostly just sing. so to anyone who doesn't get a lead role- don't be discouraged! ensemble members are still a big part of the show, and are treated equally. your dance moves will impress more than a dull speaking part would. opening night is just 6 days away- wish us luck! feel free to e-mail me with any Footloose questions @ jennab1017@aol.com. much <3, high school student

Yet another person asking for the script, although the thing is our Musical Theater program at my school has already purchased the rights to the script. The thing is we were sent the brand new script, which in our opinion blows compared to the old one. Almost all of the emotional drama that could come from scenes with Shaw or Ren's Uncle Wes is killed and we'd appreciate it if we could use the old script. So is it possible that someone could please e-mail the script if they have it. It would be even better if you could e-mail the old sheet music as well. Just feels like we were conned into paying for the rights to something we didn't want.

Ariel is one of the main characters in Footloose as your probably aware! She is the daughter of the Reverend and has had issues with her father ever since her brother died in a car crash. It is for this reason that Ariel chooses to rebel against her father hooking up with Chuck the town's bad boy (or so to speak). Are you a good dancer? Ariel does dance especially in "Hero" which is her main song. I'm not sure where you can get a script but i'm sure your director will give you one. The director will also decide if there is a kiss. In my production it wasn't till the final night that the people who played Ariel and Ren kissed. I hope this has helped a little and i wish you all the best for your production. :-)

Last night we had opening night. I play the character of Vi and it is an extreamely good role. If you enjoy singing the role of Vi will be extra fun to play as we have two solo songs "Can you find it in your heart" and " Learning to be Silent". As for the kiss... in our production we don't, the script doesn't say to so it's up to your director. It doesn't really fit the scene at the end as we just hug. Vi is so much fun to play, you wont be disapointed!

Ren and Ariel do kiss at the end of Almost Paradise.

In our production, we removed a lot of the physicality between Ariel and Chuck, but left the Ren/Ariel things like embraces and the kiss.

The actors rehearsed it as a stage kiss, with their hands covering the fact that they didn't really kiss. But when it came closer to performance time, they decided to do a real kiss. It got some yells and catcalls from the audience. :)

The script does not call for Rusty and Willard to kiss. In our production, we had Willard nervously kiss Rusty on the cheek in the scene after Town Council, just before the finale.

If your boyfriend isn't okay with a stage kiss on the cheek, you might want to rethink your relationship. Hahaha.

I am directing Footloose at the high school where I teach, and it's less than a month till opening night now! We are all working hard and are very excited.

Reading through the comments, I found a similar thread to some of them. Yes, there are a lot of smaller parts in Footloose. I see this as a great thing - more people can get involved! But it has been a bit of hassle for us.. tough to get so many people to be able to rehearse 3-4 times a week, and tough to convince lots of people that they are an integral part of the show.

There are plenty of students who are taking their parts and making the most of them. They know any part is important and that it's fun to be part of a team. I just wish everyone could have that outlook.

No matter what part you get, be happy that you're involved in such an awesome thing. Musicals are very difficult and costly to put on. Very few high schools in my province put them on. Be proud of your role, no matter what it is, and do the best that you can. A positive attitude will help make your experience memorable.

Hi everybody! I get so excited reading all of your "Footloose" ; Yaks! I am currently directing the show at a high school in PA. I would like to answer some of your questions regarding the show. I don't claim to know everything about musical theater, but I do believe I've been trained by THE BEST. In regards to Jeter and Irene--let's face it--these aren't the biggest parts in the show. Irene is only in Act 2 Scene 1. Jeter is a slightly bigger part, being that he is one of Ren's friends. Depending on the director, Jeter can be found in most scenes. However, he doesn't have very many lines. The message I have for you guys is this: though you may not have the lead role, feel happy with yourselves! You're a part of a special team effort. Without you, the show will not be the same. Be the best Irene/Jeter you can be! In regards to Cowboy Bob's mom--Honey, we all want our children to get the lead role. This just isn't possible. Though your son is upset, try to make him understand that he is important in his own way. The problem with parents these days is that they jump to blame the teacher/director (or ANYONE ELSE) instead of seizing the opportunity to instill valuable morals in their children. Tell your son he is part of a team. As you know, there is no "I" in team. Finally, at no point in the musical does the script call for Rusty and Willard to kiss. Sorry to all of you hopeless romantics!

I know what school you're from, and I'm going to tell you somethihg. #1: Trust your director. She would never choose a show that doesn't suit her students. #2: Always give new things a try before worrying/criticizing . #3: There are just as many (IF NOT MORE) girl parts in Footloose the musical than guy parts. Trust your director, ok? :)

I just found out today that we are doing Footloose for our spring musical. I am really excited about it but some of the other studients are upset about it because there is alot of guy parts and we dont have alot of guys and there is alot of dancing. We go to a small school so i think that is one of the problems. I think we will be fine no matter what happens. We did Bye Bye Birdie last year and i really had alot of fun doing it. I hope it will be the same or even better. We just got our auditorum redone this summer so i think that the show will be done really great in it.

i as one of many of my fellow pupils who recently saw footloose on a trip to london thought it was amazing. the songs were up beat and made everyone have a smile on their face. even our boring teachers were dancing along to 'holding out for a hero' that was shocking to see. the lighting, dancing and the actors voices were outstanding. i am now addicted to this play and already have bought my tickets for the next performance. bravo to jonny shentall who was an understudy but gave a great performance as ren.

We are doing Footloose at Ivanhoe Grammar School in Melbourne in April 2007. Auditions October 30th 06. Should be great! I'm just trying to do some research into the play... is Ren the only real major role, or are Ariel and/or the Reverend equally large roles?

Last year my drama teacher picked
"Footloose& quot; for our school musical, and I had loads of fun. When you get an energetic cast paired with such an energetic show, magic happens! I was the youngest person with an actual part, and I got to meet tons of extraordinary people I would have never met if I hadn't participated in this show. I definitely recommend this show to anyone who's interested in participating in "Footloose.&quo t;

I absolutely love this musical!! I had the privelege of playing Ariel in my theater's production of Footloose this past summer. I believe it was one of my favorite parts I've ever played!! The story line is not as powerful as it should be, but the music is exquisite. Great harmonies, sometimes dificult, but they sounded real good once we finally got them. I don't think it's possible to not have fun doing this show. It didn't matter if we sounded like we should be on broadway, or we were failing miserably at everything, I ALWAYS had fun during the time I was doing this shows. Being Ariel was amazing and I had an awesome Ren to work with. I highly encourage anyone looking for just a fun musical to "cut loose" to, pick this one. You won't regret it.

This reveiw of footloose, out of all the others that I found, was the most helpful. My school is doing Footloose for our Year End Studies (Y.E.S. plan). As stage manager (and part of my independent studies in the pre-production of a play) it is my job to fully research footloose. Footloose either got wonderful reveiws or horrible ones. None of them really helped to specify why it was great or why it was horrible. Yours was amazing. Does anyone have any suggestions for the behind-the-scenes work on this musical....or does anyone have any rehersal/production reports they could foward me?
thanks.

Hey guys I am also playing Wendy JO in my high schools production of footloose I beyond love he character some of the stuff i do makes me laugh like my director gives me so much room to improve my lines like the hula burger line for me is now"I will have a hula burger double patty cheese melt extra mayo no tomatoes and order of chilli fries, a large side of onion rings dont forget the ketchup, a 3 scoop chocolate sundae with lots of hot fudge and caramel and ohh yeah a diet coke" It is beyond amazing for the others just try to embrace how fun this character isshe is really the one who throws a comment in to be cool and then kinda realizes how dumb she is so I say have fun good luck to all
and for the belting question I have a belt when i use it i can fill an auditorium no mic but it can be bad if it is done incorrectly you cannot strees your range and only do what is comfortable or you will get nods my choreographer got them because they used to make her belt to a high range she has a body mic now so just have fun and embody the charcters at auditions
and everyone come see it if you are around easton massahusetts it is amazing march 9 10 11 and 12 at 7 tickets at door available dont miss it

being black in theater is sort of hard, but you can make it work. If you fit the part it shouldnt matter what race you are. My best friend is black and in this show she is playing Ren's mother. In past shows she has played Medea in Medea, a bird-girl in Seussical, and shes playing titania in a midsummer nights dream. in most shows race shouldnt be an issue (except for those select few like Aida and Miss Saigon)... i dont know where you currently are, but your drama teacher is wrong, maybe you should move to a place where either you're not the only black person, or you would feel more comfortable.

My school is doing footloose in November, and I am playing Ethel, yeah Ethel. I was disappointed at first, because I blew my director away, she even said I did, but, after our read-through yesterday, I think the part will be fun, even though there are only about 5 people that got parts that fit them. Oh, and in teh Finale, it's set at the dance adn at the "cut foot loose, woah" part, the adults enter and stand on a 4 foot platform, and teh music schreechesto a halt and everyone's afraid that the reverand is going to stop the dance. Here's another question...do you (or anybody else) have any clue as to when the scene is that Rusty and Willard kiss? I've read my script front to back and there aren't many situations between them that seem "kiss appropriate". The only one I can think of is the scene in the end where Willard is talking about wearing his dad's suit and getting a corsage, and he says they can dance...a little help please? lol

Me again...in our production, we edited some of the language in the script to make it cleaner for family audiences. We also had to cut the entire song "The Girl Gets Around" (boo-hoo) because our director felt it was too risque. The script is actually pretty easy to adapt to a more PG audience, though.

-- Jun 20, 2005 at 9:35AM
Amanda,
I was in Footloose two years ago as Ariel and one of my best friends played Rusty. The biggest challenge she faced was capturing Rusty's spunky sense of self-confidence. As you go through the script, notice that the ONLY uncertainty in Rusty's life is caused by Willard's inability to express his feelings toward her...and even that doesn't worry her too much. So when you're onstage, own it, strut your stuff, and pleeeeze don't hold anything back on "Let's Hear It For the Boy!"

To everyone who needs a copy of the Footloose script, it is available at the NYPL of the Performing Arts on 64th Street in NYC. Also, if you belong to a Perf Arts college with a substantial library, chances are your school already has one or knows the resident Theatre Queen who can get one! Good luck to all of you!

i am going to be playing rusty and when i found out i was ecstatic...but then i looked at the script and realized how major of a part this is...and now i'm having doubts that i can play her. i mean, i know i can sing her songs and dance, but I want to make sure i understand everything about her character and personality so i don't make a fool of myself come show time. if anyone can give me a few pointers on how to go about playing her, i would greatly appreciate it. my screen name is: chasingthesun152

I'm cast as WEndy Jo in our local theatre company production of footloose and I see her as shy about boys, but gets caught up in Urleens enthusiasm over Ren, she's actually quite intelligent (see burger blast scene). Her and Urleen are younger than Rusty and Ariel and don't really have the boy experiance they do. So basically she's shy and smart but secretly would love to have the confidence the others have with boys.

I was cast as Rusty in my school's production, and I have to say it was the funnest experience in my high school career. At first, I wanted Vi but as I got into it, I realized that Rusty is just so much more fun than Vi (or any adult) would ever be. Plus, Willard is the awesomest character ever onstage and Rusty gets to be his girl. I'm still clinically depressed that its over. Anyways, our school got all standing ovations and everyone, literally everyone, loved it. It's a great musical.

One that Shaw sing at the end could be left out, it goes on for days. But anyways I feel as though thay make Wendy Jo a fat, stupid girl, is that true? I would love to hear from others point of views. Thanks!! The play is next week and cant wait to act my part.

Im so annoyed right now with our director of the plays at my school. We are doing footloose this spring and the audition process has been going on since January. We need to have one more call back before he posts the list but for the past three weeks he's either had to cancel or it snowed and we didnt have school. A lot of people are stressing out cause the opening night is in 49 days. Some people just dont think this play isn't supposed to happen for a reason. Im really mad that the practices keep getting cancel cause this is the first time that i ever got a call back and the first time I really feel like I have a chance of getting a part. I know the part of Ariel is between me and another girl but I have a feeling she will get it because shes a senior and its her last play. And I know I am so much better than her and I would do a better job!

I think that to get a leading role you should definitely hone your dancing skills (obviously dancing is an integral part of the show) and have a strong audition song. If there's a vocal director at your school, you can probably approach him/her about choosing a song that will best showcase your voice. Most importantly, just be confident in your own abilities and let your strong qualities shine through to the directors during auditions. Break a leg!!

Our local community theatre in putting on "Footloose" ; next week, and I get the priviledge to play an extreamly fun and demanding part, Chuck. However, I must say (a) the slow songs (Learning to be Silent, Can You Find it in YOur Heart) are the most emotional songs in our production and my most favorite. Also, our version of "Hero" features many, many moving and flashing lights with the entire ensemble washed in green geled lights. Not to mention "The Girl Gets Around" with the provoctive choreography will surely make the audieance want more.

I played the role of Principal Harry Clark, which kinda got a bigger role than the Braodway production. Kelley,
If you dont want to have a huge part because you are fairly young but you do still want a part, then i suggest either Urleen or Wendy Jo. They are really cute funny parts and get a lot of laughs. They have a song where they both sing in a trio with Rusty and quite a few lines solo. ('Somebody's Eyes') They also 2 sing short somebody's eyes reprises (for scene changes etc.) and they sing with Ariel and Rusty in 'Holding out for a Hero' which is a great song. They have a few really cute lines and also sing in the trio in the opening number and closing number. Hope this gives you a little bit of help, post on here again and ask if you want some more info (eg. more on their script and lyrics etc.)

I protrayed Vi Moore, Shaw's wife. I beleive that Shaw and Vi, if the charecters are protrayed well, can be very importiant charecters that leave a strong impact on the audience. Best to learn early that theatre is very political-just because
you're the most talented, does not mean you'll get the best part. If you love the business enough, you'll stay with it. If not-get out before it breaks your heart. Either way-good luck!

I'm a a freshman at Brown University, and I'm proposing footloose to a board here to codirect and choreograph it. Cross your fingers. I hope it gets passed! Anyway, if you want to talk about anything involving the musical, let me know. I know much. AIM: MarcAaron03
Eric, Rev. Shaw is an awesome part. Embrace it and be awesome. The audience's emotions are most with him. Allow them to understand your character. You want them to be upset with you yet sympathetic becuase of your pain. And yes, those songs are tear jerkers...take advantage of them!

Hello all you footloosers!
I have been cast as the character Shaw for my senior year in the franklin high school (franklin wisconsin)drama department and i am thrilled! i agree with the statement made in an ealier post i am also a little disapointed with this review because Shaw may have less up beat songs but hes such a Dinamic character! "I confess" wow what a song, i get teary every thime i sing it! Good luck to all for those who are also preforming Footloose!

I found out today that I was cast in the part of "Betty Blast" (in addition to a townsperson or something) in my High School spring musical. My teacher said that she's a rollerskating waitress, but I was wondering if anyone has some more information about the part or things I might want to prepare for it. Could she have a Jersey accent? Does she chew gum? Should I practice roller skating? All comments are welcome. My email is thought_is_art@yahoo .com

My college theater program recently performed Footloose to sold out crowds for three weeks. As a fan of the movie, I loved the play. Set in the 80s, the play was remarkable in the fact of the talent on the stage, and that it was close to the movie.... I enjoyed it and would recommend it to everyone

I'm 11 years old and i recently got the part of Urleen.I'm dissapointed because i don't have many lines and i feel like my drama coach is focusing too much on Ariel and Ren. Also, i don't feel she picked the right people for the right parts.I'm really upset. Someone please write back to tell me what i should do!
