There are few things I'm less informed about than gangsta rap. I find it an altogether unappealing artform, if for no other reason that is it the unwelcomed descendant of such a virtuous one: the "protest soul" of James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Gil Scott-Heron and Stevie Wonder. I find it artless on a strictly musical level, and I also find it foolish on a lyrical level, as so much of it seems to date itself nearly three weeks after it first appears on the marketplace. The latter is obviously of no consequence, as many of these rap artists produce what feels like ten new records a year, always branching out into other projects on their label. Indeed, many new gangsta rap CD's come with the music industry equivalent of "coming attractions" in the CD case. Even the best rap of all time, Public Enemy, has moments of irrelevancy, either from just saying the year over and over again, or referencing recent columns in the New York tabloids.

But now that I've gotten all this off of my chest, I must come to, what they say, is the "exception that proves the rule." For some time, I've been fascinated by Jay-Z. If for no other reason than the sheer magnitude of his balls. I first became aware or Mr. Z. last summer, when his "Hard Knock Life" single took over New York. The first time I heard it, I was downtown somewhere, and I thought for sure it was some goofy DJ having fun, or else being "meta-textual." There's no way a hard-ass ghetto rapper would even sample (excuse me, interpolate) something from the God damned Annie soundtrack! Bizarre samples abound in modern music, but I expect them from Beck, the Beastie Boys or Soul Coughing . . . you know, the white groups who are making a mocker (and a mint) off of the black man's music. Just what was Jay-Z up to?

The new album, The Life and Times of S. Carter, seems just another of the modern gangsta raps albums. By this, I mean that the beats are simplistic and the rapping is lazy (Notorious B.I.G. was the most soporific rapper, I found.) There are the occasional clever rhymes, though when you check the credits and learn that it takes four men to come up with the junk, it isn't all that impressive.

Then there are these occasional glimpses of brilliance, these winks to the listeners who are looking for something more than a sports team in their MC. Most striking, like last year's Annie sample, is the tune "S. Carter." It's chorus goes, "S dot Carter, ya must try harder, your competition is nada." Over and over again. And it is sung by what sounds like a chorus of . . . um . . . let me put it this way? Remember that record Gilbert Gottfried brought on the Stern show of retarded school children singing nursery rhymes? It's like that. I swear. So, in addition to reminding me of the old Python "S. Frog" bit, we've somehow pushed gangsta rap to a point of genuine absurdity. It is with a wide smile that I dub Jay-Z the Marcel Duchamp of gangsta rap.

This is a process that's was inevitable. Here is a group of entertainers trading on their danger, yet they rename themselves with happy, hoppy, kiddie names like Snoop Doggie Dog and Puff Daddy. The regressive properties of urban patios have been chronicled before (e.g., when the kids say bad, they mean good) but a chorus of children singing off key is taking this to a whole new level. Gangsta rap is a musical form that trades so much on its looks, the fashion and the branding (one can order Jay-Z gear direct with info from the CD booklet,) that once an MC reaches a point of acceptance I find he can just coast on rehashing tales of shootouts and clubbing to new beats. But Jay-Z keeps pushing the envelope of erstwhile-tough. Many of the numbers on the new Jay-Z disc are straight, but it is the audacity of many of the background noises, certainly the least important element to the core audience, that prove that Jay-Z is trying to make some sort of statement.

As it stands, I have no idea what that statement is, but I stand in awe of it as the CD tracks along.

The disc opens with the blight that so much gangsta rap suffers from. It dates itself. Jay-Z raps how you (the listener) are now putting on the new Jay-Z disc, you've just ripped off the wrapping, you're reading the credits, etc. It is amusing the first time, dull the second, unlistenable the third. However, the rap is over a sample of the horribly white cover version of Jimi Hendrix' "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" by Rotary Connection. Just what are we to make of this collision of texts? There's no way anyone "street" could find virtue in the lily-white zum-zum-zum cover version.

Jay-Z goes further, describing a thugs night out ("makin' time at the waffle house,") spelling out the qualities he likes in women, how he's avoided cops, the courts, has no bodyguard . . . you know, all the usual bullshit trying to prove that despite the success, he'll always be "street." It's also chock full of hidden reference to those he finds virtuous, and those he finds whack. I can't decipher any of it; undoubtedly it's the pro-wrestling feuding that's half the fun. But beneath all this, are odd little Chinese whistles, Japanese guitar plinks, and low Moog whirrs in addition to the usual 70s funk excerpts. The hiden track has a synthesizer-led sing-song chorus of "Ji-gga, my ni-gga" that sounds like a street "March of the Wooden Soldiers." It all seems so gloriously unnecessary.

I've given other gangsta rappers thorough listenings. DMX, who is top of the charts right now, is a drop dead bore peppering his album with lengthy street-700 Club diatribes. I think Jay-Z is an inadvertent genius. He's created a useless and unacceptable mass commodity, and it is only his current standing as a pop icon that sneaks it past the radar. When his star has waned, people will ultimately recognize his unique voice. He will then either be lauded as a marvel ahead of his time, or we will all collectively slap our heads and ask, "Just what the hell were we thinking?"

True talent will always outshine and stand above others. This album may actually awaken the sleeping minds of hip hop fans everywhere. I hope we as a people stay awake this time.

the artist tell there history, just like ancient greece or rome, only more interesting with a soulful beat to it.
rap, in my opinion is the best kind of music because it uses rhyme in lyrics has a deep bass line and good use of instuments and back-up vocals,
i much rather listen to some 2pac, nas, JayZ and snoop over backdoor boys, limp bizkit & other forms of music that whinge about there upbringing (mainly punk rock)

...what even fuels this machine called hiphop so, how could you look under its' hood and diagnose a problem with one of it's main components? That having been said, I will only address one issue that could easily be misunderstood if you are not familiar with the way the sampling/interpolation process works. You stated (and i do paraphrase) that it takes four men to come up with that "junk". Sean Carter writes all of his lyrics. Other names listed in the credits include the rap songs' producers who are given song writing credits, the writer the material was sampled from (if any) and the performer of the original material sampled which, in many cases, may differ from the song's composer. This is commonly known as covering your ass, a practice that has been adhered to in the Pop, Rock, R&B and Hip-Hop genres since the Biz Markie sampling incident in either 90 or 91. Any good lawyer, no.... any efficient lawyer would advise the same.

In short, I've grown up listening to the music for over 20 years and I have watched it evolve. I've seen many come and go and I am aquainted with many whom have had their 15 minutes of fame in the hip-hop spotlight. This like other music formats is an art an must be judged with no only an objective but a KNOWLEDGEABLE ear. Yes, I've heard Vivaldi's Four Season's before but, I would never shame my self by trying to critique it.

This letter is actually a response to Mr. Hoffman's review of "Jay-Z. Vol. 3 The Life and Times of Shawn Carter."

Before I start my rant, I would like to acknowledge Mr. Hoffman for posting his opinion in the open for me to rebut. First off, your perception of "gangsta rap" is what more than likely spawned this completely one-sided review. Shawn Carter is not a "Gangsta Rapper". His music is not "Gangsta Rap". It is my belief that this artform does not even exist anymore. Jay-Z is an artist, nothing more, nothing less. He is a representative (a good one can be debated) of a life that you, Mr. Hoffman, have not lived (or probably never will). True "gangsta rap", as you so call it, is repetitous and I completely agree with you on DMX, but within the lyrics and the "odd little Chinese whistles" is the present form of hip hop culture. Pardon my French, but what the fuck would you know about what half the shit Jay-Z is talking about? You admitted it yourself that you couldn't comprehend the hidden references to other artists whom Jay-Z is talking about. Just like I wouldn't understand what Pink Floyd, or Led Zeplin. My argument is this: somebody who at least understands the culture should be reviewing music that represents it.

The purpose of a review is to bring both the good point and bad point that you found. This review however, does nothing but excite your opinion in a negative way. Pls. understand the importance of street life,anyone that has lived a "street life" knows that it's a grimy life. I have not listened to this album since I wrote this review in January because I do not find it worthy of repeated exposure. I recognize it, though, as the marvel of dadaism it is, as explained in my review.

One need not revisit art to realize it's virtuous quality. However, one should, and will, revisit good music for aesthetic, emotional, non-cerebral reasons. I do not do this with Jay-Z, as it is unworthy on this level. Again, the reasons are described in my review.

Does that make Jay-Z an artistic success? Yes, but not in the way he originally intended, or the way, it would appear, his audience is responding to it.

I suggest you look at my review of Sonic Youth's newest collection of the 20th Century "new" composers (http://leisuresuit.net/Webzine/articles/sonic_youth.shtml) to see where *I* see Jay-Z fitting in within the modern music canon.

Furthermore, my comments on race in this review are not malign. The regressive sampling, made first evident with the "Annie" clip on Jay-Z's previous album, had heretofre been a hallmark of artists who had not been marketing themselves as "hard." These artists, for whatever reasons, had all been white (Beck, the Beasties, etc.) If you can point me in the direction of an African-American "gangsta" artist who had done the same thing before Jay-Z (and as publicly), I will gladly rescind my comments.

I read you review 2 days ago then rushed out to the store to purchase Jay Z's new CD. First of all how can you say that this review is anything other than pure hating!!! Not only were you closed minded in your comments but you statements were ridiculous. How can you judge something you know nothng about. You started you article by stating that "There are few things I'm less informed about than gangsta rap."
Nothing was ever more true. You attempt to use large words to cover your ignorance didnt work well either. If you put as much effort into trying to understand where Jigga is coming from as you did when you were thinking of ways to be rude, you would see this record has gone platinum for numerous reasons (his lazy voice being one of them). Also interpolating from the Annie soundtrack to get his point across was pure brilliance not something white bands do. Sampling is for everyone (ask Puffy). That was a very ignorant comment on your behalf. Please respond to me comments because I would love to hear how your feel about being called an ASSHOLE who knows nothing about GANGSTA RAP!!!!

Just for the record, when one
insults another for whatever reason(s),
basically it's just because the insulter
doesn't understand & is ignorant to the
subject at hand.

Hoffman you say that you gave his CD a
positive review, however your comments
are non-other than negative.
Where's the positivity you speak of, 'cuase
it sounds like contradiction myself!
The fact that you're criticizing practically
everything even down to the tracks &
samples he uses. I'm pretty sure it's relatively
hard for these artists to come up w/the right music
to amplify the lyrics, yet talented as well.
Meaning you can have "tight" lyrics and/or music, but
if one can't compliment the other, it's basically a
wasteland. In fact, seeing as how Jay-Z has gone to
the extent of using the Anne's theme, does say genius to
me, it says he knew what he wanted when he wrote these
lyrics & what it took to compliment them as well.
He set his goal & attained it by going to whatever means of
getting permission for that sample.

Many of you who call your work "critiquing", more than
half the time you don't even understand the work that's
presented to you. So instead of admiting that you don't
fully understand or even have a glimpse of what the artist is
saying, you'd rather criticize than admit your own
ignorance. You would know that "EVERYTHING" is not for everyone!
Some will get it, some won't, but again who are you to judge!?!?

"ALL" artist, whether it's hip hop, opera, dance etc.
they're all a form of expression, nonetheless. Yet they're all
unique in it's own form & if you don't understand it, better yet,
don't want to understand, you shouldn't "knock" another just because
you don't "get it."
