There has been a great personal tragedy in my life.

A tragedy unequalled by all but the most heinous of childhood heinousnesses (which of course was the time when I was 3 and Judy the Babysitter sent me running out of the house to distract my parents while her boyfriend fled out the back door and into his Pinto. I was whacked upside the head by my father until my parents realized that my three-year-old frame lacked the physical wherewithal to open our big oak door unassisted. To assuage his guilt my father fed me Rocky Road until I was sick.)

I am speaking of the most profound of all disappointments--dreams unrealized, goals unfulfilled. A childhood wish that now never can be. I am speaking, of course, of the tragic death of Shirley Hemphill, the portly, lovable-though-cantankerous, tubbily girth-fraught and oh-so-sassy waitress from TV's "What's Happening!!"

Shirley died before the new Willennium, quietly, and without much media fanfare. Her gardeners arrived at her home in West Covina, California on December 10th only to find Shirl face down in her bedroom, a victim of kidney failure. There was no pick in her hair.

Shirley was an icon. A tour-de-force comedic presence equaled only by Jimmy JJ "DYN-O-MITE" Walker and maybe Marla Gibbs. Many of my early impressions of black people were formed by Shirley givin' Rerun and Dee the what-for. Although the late 1980's follow-up sitcom "What's Happening Now!!" had about as much appeal as a swollen lymph node, I could see that Shirley had become less blustery and more self-confident. She had adopted a cropped, more macho haircut, offsetting the rest of her frame and causing her to appear mid and bottom heavy. But it didn't matter if she was fat. It didn't matter if she talented. Shirl had grown into her own, unfettered by the whims and pressures of society. I knew that that's the type of person that I wanted to grow to be.

Through the 90's, I followed Shirley's stand-up comedy routine on television from such diverse shows as A&E's "An Evening at the Improv" to BET's "Black Comedy Showcase" to BET's "Black Comedy Tonight". And when I moved to Los Angeles in January, 1997 and saw "TONIGHT: SHIRLEY HEMPHILL" up on the marquee of The Laugh Factory on the Sunset Strip, I knew that I had truly arrived Over the Rainbow, to a place where dreams that you dare to dream really do come true. Someday, I was going to cross that cathode ray barrier and meet the comedic mass myself.

But the allure of the city kept me away. If nothing else, Los Angeles is a town of unending stimuli, and after my initial incredulity, Shirley was filed away in the "I'll have to do that someday" section of my brain. Every time I'd head out to a DGA screening, to Book Soup, or some other similarly located spot, I'd drive past The Laugh Factory and see Shirl's name in lights, heading up the marquee. The rest of the country didn't know it, but in the City of Angels, Shirley was still at the top.

One day in January, I drove past The Laugh Factory and was disappointed not to see Shirley's name up there. I checked the LA Weekly, but sadly there was no mention, and Shirley was once again filed away. It was not until March that some Internet research yielded what I had secretly feared.

Okay, let's be honest. Shirley's stand-up routine was terrible. The only reason I felt compelled to see her was because she was a media-imposed image from my childhood, and as flawed human beings we assign arbitrary significance to those things which impacted us as youths. I would have been similarly affected had I heard that Mr. Wizard had been blinded by flaming magnesium, or Ray "My Favorite Martian" Walston crush by a runaway Ferris wheel.

Icons do not die, and yet this one did . . . simply, quietly and tragically, in her home. And sadly, with no pick in her hair.

Shirley, we hardly knew ye.

Danielle Spencer (AKA Dee Thomas), last I heard, is a veterinarian in the Los Angeles area.

She made a brief cameo appearance in the movie "As Good As It Gets" playing, oddly enough, a veterinarian.

I recently saw Ernest Thomas on an episode of "Everybody Hates Chris."

Haywood Nelson is nowhere to be found.

I love shirley in what's happening. I did not know of her outside of that particular show. I was saddened when I heard that she had passed and especially by herself with no one there...It must still have been a lonely life for her. I liked Sirley so much....but still watch the reruns of the show on DVD.....I also miss Rerun and Mabel King.....What's happening with Dee though? Any word??.....

I pray that Ms. hemphill is ressssssting peace. I enjoyed her on What's happening, andstill do on the DVD's. Her contribution to African-American Media Canon will notgo unrecognized. Her images were positive, in the very fact that she did not portray typical, violent nor oversexed AA females prevalent today. Take note: Future producers of tomorrow, Take a clue from Eric Monte(Creator of What's Happening)to create meaningful and positive characters that were of consequence and worthy discussion.

Watching the reruns lately and decided to see what Shirl was up to these days and am heartbroken to find out she's no longer with us.
I have memories of hanging out at my grandma's after school with my cousin Sil and watching reruns of the show only a few short years after it's original run.
We all laughed our butts off when Shirl made her faces and my Italian Grandma laughed too...even though she didnt understand a word, Shirl was funny to her...why?
because she was funny in her bones, not a schooled and trained funny, but a funny woman who made had a God-given natural gift.
So sad she passed, I hope she brings some laughter to people up in heaven.. will miss you Shirl...

I was checking the internet to find out when Ms. Mabel King was very saddened to learn of Ms. Hemphill's passing. I came to this sight and was reading the other yaks. Some should not have been listed. They show just how ignorant people can be. Whatever she may have done to you let it go. It will only get you in a fast seat to hell. What's Happening!! made me laugh 30 years ago...Here it is almost 30 years later and I am still laughing as I watch it on TV Land. That marathon was great to watch the other weekend! Brought back alot of memories!!

Shirley, Re-Run, Dwayne, Roger, Dee, and of course Mama as Mable, were the funniest group when they were together on television.

I miss Shirley...Mama...and of course Re-Run and his dancing. I wonder what the surviviors..Roger, Dwayne, and Dee are doing now days since their all grown up.

P.S. I love to see "Rob" when he does the "Afflack" commercials today on TV!

TV land is just showing us what real tv is supposed to be, not like today. All these shows including Whats Happening is a reminder to us people that grew up in the 70's that we had it made! If only we could return to that era when we were young and didnt have a care in the world! Rest in peace to all those greats who made me laugh as a young kid, wish I had a time machine!

I watched the "What's Happening!" marathon this past weekend and I must applaud TVLand for the great memories.

My 11 year old son and I watched the show a majority of the weekend and he got hooked already. This was his first time ever hearing about "What's Happening!"

I knew that Shirley, Mabel King and Fred Barry all passed away within 5 years of each other (Mabel & Shirley 1999, Fred, 2003) and now I'm wondering if the rest of the gang are doing fine.

I too have been watching the TVLand Marathon of "What's Happening". I watched all weekend long with the exception of when I had to go to work. It was really fun watching the gang, and wondering "what happened to everyone". Then I read up and found out that Shirley (along with Mable and Fred"Rerun" ;) had all passed on. It was really sad. Shirley is being missed right at this moment, she was a fabulous actress/comedian. I found out that Dee is now a veternarian, and "Raj" has made some appearances on other shows, but what's happening with Dwayne (he is so cute)? Thanks TvLand for the marathon and I plan on watching the show every nite at 10.

I just watched (listened mostly) to the marathon of Whats Happening!!

I got curious and looked up the cast. Was saddened to read of so many deaths.

I liked Shirley's role but also felt bad for all the insults she must have taken personnally through-out the scripts regarding her appearance.

It takes a strong woman to play a role that consistantly berated her looks.

Never met her, never knew her but through her role was saddened to hear of her passing.

I remember when Shirley came to Los Angeles and started at the Comedy Store in the early 70s. She use to hang in the back of the club and listen to the other comedians. She wasn't a drinker nor did she use drugs she would have one or two soft drinks. She was focus on learning her craft. I often gave her a ride home and would some-times stop to get donuts. I really like Shirley as a person and was so happy to see she made it.

Years later, I was in Ventura at my favorite Strawberry stand and Shirley drives up in a brand new Mercedes and she came up to me. After all those years she remembered me and was geninuely excited to see me and I was excited to see her.

Shirley Hemphill used to play at "The Laff Stop" here in Houston at the River Oaks Shopping Center. Though I never saw her shows, I was so honored to meet her when she used to fill her car up with gas at the old Gulf Station[later Chevron] on the corner on Montrose/West Dallas...my former partner used to work there and she came by occasionally during her Houston excursions. She was a very nice lady and an angel to all us she crossed paths with. She was always down to earth and she never acted like a Hollywood brat. God Bless You eternally Shirley and Thank YOU for all the joy you brought into our lives.

Shirley & Rerun I will miss you both.
I had the pleasure of meeting both of you at different times in DC and will never forget you both.
On April 1 1997 Shirley was doing a appearance on the Don and Mike show in Northern Va. I was competing to win a dinner with Tara Banks.
That was when Shirley showed up. You see since it was April fools day there was no Tara. So the station gave all the contestants a free dinner with Shirley.
We all had a great time as she told us stories Hollywood in the 70's. The diabetes was slowing her down and she required a walker but she was still full of life. She smile the whole time she was there.
I met "Rerun" in DC when he was part of the UniverSoul Circus in 2001
My sister-in-law worked for them. It was backstage between shows and I remember they had a little hot dog stand for the entertainers. We talked wile he ate his hot dog and I got a photo of us both. You could tell he was saddened when our conversation turned to Shirley.
Both of you were super-nice people and will be missed.

All this attention on Shirley when all she did was get me a burger and point out when I put mah big foot in mah bigger mouth. I was the head clown in that show and was in charge of setting up such bad comedic clean-up artist like Shirley, Raj and his little sister, Dee.

In the episode "Saturday's Hero," I was given the spotlight and I ran with it. As a footbal star, I was able to show my true acting prowess whilst leaving Urkel's grandfather, Raj, in my comedy dust. In the episode titled "The Burger Queen" the audience watched me get my dance on as I almost won a contest to become a spokeman for a burger chain. If Dee didn't front like she had some talent and win that contest, I'd be all over your TV getting girls like Billy Dee.

People need to recognize who the real talent was on that show, I set up the jokes, I made Dwayne Wayne's old man Raj look good and I made your ABC sitcom interesting!

I'm finna get a lawyer.

Damn.

I was wanting to get in touch with an old girlfriend, a comedy writer in LA. I thought, the Internet. You can get ahold of anyone on the Internet.

Then I remembered: While Claire (my ex) might not be readily accessible, I could get to her by contacting a mutual friend, Shirley Hemphill. After all, she was big in her day and still a touring comic.

Shirley could lead me to Claire.

So I plugged Shirley Hemphill into a search engine and found this article.

No. You can't get ahold of everyone on the Internet.
