Name: joe Chetwynd Subject: Visit to Boston -- Feb 22, 2009 at 9:01PM Sterling Hayden came to Boston about six years before he passed away to Cancer. He visited the Charlestown Navy Yard and the Spirit of Massachusetts fishing schooner that was being built there. Later that evenibg he went to the Olde Corner Book Store in Washington St. , Boston and signed books along with Joe Garland of Gloucester who had written the new tribute to the Gloucester fishing schooners and the men who sailed in them, " Down To The Sea." It was a great day for Boston and the lovers of maritime history and the sea. The turn out at the Navy yard was well attended. Mr Hayden met the grandson of Capt Ben Pine , Michael Benjamin Pine , a short , bear of a man , and wrapped him in his own great arms and lifted him off the ground , kissed him on the cheek and said to him, " Your Grandfather was a great man . I loved him so." At the book store, the line of those who came to pay their homage to this legend of a man stretched well around the block. The store had to call the publishers to send down more boxes of books to be bought and signed. They were also signed by Mr Hayden. The store stayed open several hours after they expected to close , as so many had come to meet Sterling Hayden , many whose fathers, brothers or uncle had either known him as former crew or from their years in Gloucester and elsewhere. It was a grand event. I shall never forget it , and especially the few minute we got to talk with him about the Gloucestermen and their schooners.

Name: Phil Subject: Sterling Hayden -- Dec 10, 2008 at 8:53PM Sterling was a huge man both in presence and stature. He had a loud, gruff nature that masked true sesitivity. I met him through motorcycling a passion we both shared, and worked on his vintage BMWs until he died. His modest home in Wilton Connecticut had a room in the basement, outfitted in used Post Office furniture, where he wrote. He told me he would write and drink until he fell off his stool. He was more like Hemingway than anyone I have ever met. He loved his barge in Paris and truly enjoyed motorcycling. He would travel by tramp steamer with his BMW R26 to Portugal where he would ride from village to village sampling the wine and meeting the people. We hear so much about this man but never is mentioned what a gentle fellow he was. It was true he hated acting, and his stories were hillarious, but he always admitted that it allowed him to do whatever he pleased. I still miss him.
Name: David Subject: SH -- Nov 2, 2008 at 11:01AM I met Hayden when I was a screwed up 16 year old punk kid, I had a girlfriend whose parents lived near him in Sausalito-he was one sharp guy who gave a shit. Name: Ed Millett Subject: OSS -- Aug 17, 2008 at 1:53AM I just met and became friends with Bill Hood,OSS-CIA and author of Mole the story of the Russian spy to become an American counterspy. He is from Maine as is Sterling Hayden and me. Sterling reminds me of another deceased friend, Gary Merrill who also lived in Maine. I read the Wanderer several years ago and after seeing NBC and the story of the OSS and the famous people involved including Julia child and Sterling Hayden I read excerpts of the Wanderer and can't wait to read it again. Bill Hood wrote several other books. I will be seeing him next week and can't wait to talk about the famous people in the OSS. I already have stories about Bobby and Jack Kennedy and sub-machine guns and when the first guy who was ready to retire from the CIA learned there were no pensions. Anyone interested? Name: NMcKeown Subject: Lee/Schooner location -- Aug 7, 2008 at 12:56AM Here's an answer to a previous query from Lee in 2007 (!): The SH schooner Wanderer was wrecked on a reef at Rangiroa (Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia) and for many years (through the 80s and 90s), the wheel of the boat (with ID plaque) could be seen where it was prominently displayed at what used to be the Bali Hai hotel on the island of Raiatea, Society Islands, French Polynesia. The hotel is now called Hawaiki Nui, and I did not see the wheel when I was there in June 2007, though it might still be close by--somewhere. Side note: There is still a statue of Hayden's First Mate Spike Africa at a restaurant in Newport Beach, CA, and of course the 70-foot schooner Spike Africa, named for the legendary man, is also there.
Name: T.G. Fisher Subject: retro Hayden -- May 11, 2008 at 3:22PM The quality of his movies never equal the quality of his writing. Even those not interested in Hayden the actor must delight in Hayden the man as presented in his frank autobiography "Wanderer" . He tells it all and it is engrossing. The most poignant being his memory of the courage he found as a Marine in WW II juxtaposed against selling out to the Committee on Un-American Activities. He wonders what ever happened to that Marine. Read it.

Name: Tom L. Subject: re; PJM /Cliff -- Mar 10, 2008 at 2:17PM PJM has it right - The whole HUAC situation fouled up many people's lives no matter what you did. We have to ask ourselves [what would you do] if the FBI came to your front door and let you know that if you don't testify as a "freindly witness", no work, no children, no nothing!. The commity knew everything they wanted to know anyway, they just wanted to make a show of force to the public. HUAC committee chairman Edward Hart was a sociopathic power hungy person. If one reads Hayden book, you get a picture of this insane time in U.S. history. As to the tapes of Hayden on Tom Snyder's show - contact NBC, I'm sure they can provide copies.
Name: PJM Subject: re : Cliff -- Mar 10, 2008 at 12:16PM Hi Cliff, I'm sure that your theory is good. Polonsky was known by the HUAC far before SH gave his name. You say he made "20-30 mostly junky films" : just look at his filmography, and take, for instance, Johnny Guitar (54), The City is Dark (53) The killing (56) which are masterpieces. And as far as I know, the reason why he accepted to give names was that it allowed him to keep custody of his children. SH had only despise for his career and never considered himself as an actor. To BOLT : if you ever find Tom Snyder's itvs ; could you contact me ? I'd be very interressed. Thanx!
Name: cliff meneken Subject: hayden and huac -- Mar 6, 2008 at 4:47PM As much as I have admired SH, and enjoyed reading his W. book, I don't know if it has been pointed out sufficiently that the major part of his career (1950 on) was only made possible due of his testimony before the HUAC. If he had not named names, etc., his career in Hollywood would have ended, at least for a decade or more. Even though he hated himself ever after for this testimony, nevertheless he took this step to protect his career, along with his eventual financing of all his yachting adventures. The result was his ability to make 20-30 mostly junk films after that. The irony is that if he had stood up for his ideals, no easy thing at that time, he would probably still have had a chance to come back in the mid '60's to do his most famous part in Dr. Strangelove, if not others. He helped to destroy some creative artists by his actions (e.g., A. Polanski) while safeguarding his own interests. The sad thing is that SH was one of the most irreverent of the Hollywood types, yet even he was not able to stand up for what he believed. Ah SH, ah humanity.
Name: Bolt Swiftpace Subject: Sterling Hayden on Tomorrow -- Mar 3, 2008 at 3:09PM I'd really like to know if any of the tapes of Tom Snyder's interviews with Sterling Hayden are available. Name: cliff meneken Subject: book club -- Feb 28, 2008 at 6:25PM I just noticed this web site and thought I would mention to interested Marin locals that the men's reading group of which I have been a member is discussing SH's Wanderer in mid April. I have just read it and thought it great, of course. I have also talked to some old timers a bit about Sausalito and Hayden, and also talked to his son Christian. It seems from a brief perusal of the web site that there was a documentary made about SH which I would be interested in viewing.I have seen some of his movies also. Please feel free to supply any other info.you may have.
Name: Tom L. Subject: Voyage -- Feb 18, 2008 at 12:07PM Voyage was entirely written by Hayden. Initially in the mid 1960's, then shelved, and reworked in 1975 for the 1976 publication.
Name: Joel Subject: Voyage -- Jan 9, 2008 at 11:08PM Does anyone have any information regarding whether Hayden himself finished the novel "Voyage" and, if not, why and who did finish it? My reason for asking is that, toward the end of the book, certain descriptions did not seem to be those of a seaman, a distinct difference from the first two thirds of the book. There also seemed to be a certain quality in the last third, roughly, as if the writer had become anxious to finish it or had just lost interest in it. Thanks for any opinion or other reply. Cheers.

Name: dave holleman Subject: hayden in sausalito -- Oct 16, 2007 at 7:58PM in the early 60's my girlfriend lived in a little apartment on bridgeway, right across from the triden and ondine. hayden's schooner was moored at the trident's dock. one morning i awakened early, just a little at dawn, and was staring out the window, nursing a bit of a hangover and a cup of black coffee. it was a somewhat foggy morning and i was very surprised to suddenly see hayden, across the street, striding down the sidewalk. he was dressed in jeans and a navy pea-coat whose collar was pulled up around his neck. since he was a tall man his stride was quite long. right behind him, in order of height (tallest first) came his four children. each of them were matching his step, which required great effort on their part. then after ten yards or so his caravan faded into the mist. the sight of hayden and his brood, under those circumstances, left a great impression on me. in a few days he sailed away for tahiti.

Name: Jack Subject: More info, please... -- Jun 20, 2007 at 11:12PM I can't tell you what a pleasant surprise it was to find this forum, and although I've discovered many new bits of information about the fascinating human being (forget "actor") Sterling Hayden was, it seems this site has left FAR more questions about the man than answers ---- I mean, who IS Lorna, and why all the secrecy and innuendo about so many other aspects of Sterling's life and subsequent events...??? Like so many others, the book Wanderer is why I am here, so to Mr. Hayden's family, specifically his children, I ask, is it not time that this great man be given the respect that is due to him? Millions of readers have learned how lucky you were to have him as a father ----indeed, the book itself documents that he treated you as veritable kings and queens --- and I can only imagine how many American kids wish that they could even dreamed of having such devoted fathers and amazing childhoods as yours. Don't you think it is time that Sterling receive the proper respect due to him --- even just a simple family tribute website ---so that all those who were not able to enjoy the wealth of Boston University's archives could learn of his amazing journey??? As a historian --- and a New Englander -- I have learned many things about research and attempting to preserve the truth about vanishing American culture before it is lost. Therefore, to the Haydens, all I can say is that Sterling has been gone twenty years, most of his friends are gone, and you all shall not live forever. PLEASE consider being more generous in releasing Sterling's journals and personal information before it is simply too late. The alternative is that he will simply be remembered from a distance as just one more vague, glamorized Hollywood movie icon... and it is clear from his writings that he was so much more than that. Thank-you.

HAVING HAD FOUR UNCLES WHO FOUGHT HITLER, I HAD A PERSPECTIVE ON 'MEN WHO HAD BEEN TO WAR', AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS SERVICE WITH THE YUGOSLAV PARTISANS, AND THEIR FIGHT AGAINST THE INVADERS, MADE ME ADMIRE HIM FROM MY ADULT MALE PERSPECTIVE. Name: Jeff T. Subject: Sausalito & S.H. -- Dec 14, 2005 at 9:04AM Kathy, I lived in the area back then and I don't recall a caboose on fuel tanks. He did own a 1896 Pullman business railcar which was located at Tiki Junction just North of town in 1966-67 where he started to write his novel Voyage. In 1975 Sterling rented a tugboat, down among all the houseboats. Here is where Voyage was finished, then published in 1976. Sauslito was a much more interesting place back then. Today it's sort of like a wealthy resort town, too bad.

Name: Dan Subject: Re: Sterling Hayden Autograph. -- Nov 10, 2005 at 8:30PM Hi Bill, I happen to own a piece of artwork sold by Milton Darling. Your "Stirling Hayden" autograph was part of an extensive collection of autographs acquired by Mr. Darling over many years. He moved to Nebraska in 1880 from Dorcester, Mass. He was a warden and charter member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He also ran a semi-successful art dealership from around 1907 to 1933. He was also an avid supporter and patron of the arts in Omaha from the late 1800s to his death on May 6th, 1948 at the age of 87. I have some further details about him, if you'd like to know more. You can also contact the Douglas County Historical Society on the web to obtain copies of a few news articles about him. I hope this info is helpful to you. Cheers! Dan

The studio had him spell Sterling with an i instead of an e in 1940-41. Maybe after four years, it's time to correct this article?

We greeted each other and I told him that Chris and I had attended high school together. I left a little later and had forgotten a chock block that I had used behind a tire. Upon returning I see that it wasn't there and figured that Mr. Hayden had taken it. As I was looking for it he came out of "nowhere" and asked, "Are you looking for your chock block?" "Yes," I said. "I have it." He went to his car and returned it to me. A lot of questions went thru my mind and I had hoped that I could have talked with him longer. Then sometime later I read that he passed away. I always thought that he knew what was going to happen to him and he was just wanted to see places that he had known.

Name: Chris Ikaris Subject: Sterling Hayden -- Apr 4, 2004 at 11:34PM Just wanted to thank you for this web page devoted to Sterling Hayden, one of my favorite screen heroes. He was truly an American original. No actor alive today comes even close to projecting on to film the kind of "take-no-prison ers and take-no-bull" intensity that he had. But that is clearly because he was a real person who lived a real life, not a Hollywood phoney. It's a shame that today's movie industry would probably prevent a real man like him from appearing in film. Fortunately we have the silver screen record of a sterling silver performer, Sterling Hayden, to enjoy forever. Thanks again.

It's in reprint, but original hard covers from 1963 are in great demand. He was so well regarded in the Boston-Gloucester area, and every so often an old timer comes in who knew Sterling from the Fishermans Races of the 1930s. They say he was one great sailor and person, also kind of shook his head at the whole movie thing, not knowing what to make of it. Now that it's been close to 20 years since his death, his image as a 20th century icon seems to be gaining. All should find a copy of 'Wanderer' and read it!

Name: ChrisM Subject: The gay connection -- Jul 31, 2003 at 4:18PM I remember Sterling best from 9 to 5 when I was memorizing this entire movie during my adolescent, budding homosexual years. (Indeed, this is a movie loved by a great many queens, mainly because it was written by one.) Good luck renting 1900, as stocking this movie could get your local video merchant arrested for peddling child pornography. Somewhere in the frist 30 minutes of this movie is a scene of two adolescent boys masturbating in a barn. When a bomb goes off outside, they both run to the window; the long shot revealing their bobbing twin flesh soldiers in unmistakable states of arousal.
Name: Jody Garner Subject: Kubrick/Hayden -- Jul 16, 2003 at 10:39PM THE KILLING is one of my all time favorite movies and Sterling being the star makes it all the better. THE STAR is another favorite. I especially like the scenes of him sailing with Natalie Wood.
Name: Ed Royce Subject: Kubrick/Hayden -- Jul 16, 2003 at 9:57PM Hayden And Kubrick were very different types of people but they both did things their way. Kubrick was refused access to any race tracks in California for the filming of 'The Killing' (the race commission didn't want to have anything to do with a movie about robbing a race track!), so he built his own betting area set to get the movie made and in Dr. Strangelove the Air Force refused access to B-52 aircraft ( they didn't like a comedy about nuclear war that included US airplanes & air bases), so through his own research of declassified documents recreated a cockpit of a B-52.....he Air force was stunned how accurate his cockpit was. Many said at the time that both movies would be complete failures. Today, they're among the greatest movies ever made. Sterling does his part, convincing you he is exactly who he plays in the films, some of his best performances!
Name: Kurt Bayne Subject: Kubrick / Hayden -- Jun 12, 2003 at 7:45AM It's interesting movie history that amung Sterlings most rememorable films were Stanley Kubrick projects, 'The Killing'; 1956 and 'Dr. Stranglove'; 1963. In 1956 Kubrick was virtualy unknown film maker who insisted on getting Hayden as the lead, saying at the time "He creates a realism like no other actor in Hollywood". I5's amazing he landed him for the part since sterling was getting 35,000 a picture in the mid 50's which was way above Kubricks budget. Again Stanley insisted on Hayden for the part of Jack Ripper in Strangelove, one of the scariest comedy's ever made. This was the only movie Sterling did in a ten year absence from acting. Kubrick is remembered as one of the greatest movie makers of the 20th century, who knew what he was doing when casting Sterling in these timeless films!

My last name, in fact, means the prince, specifically the second son of a royal family, of Spain and Portugal. So my name is royalty! Look it up in any dictionary. As far as my assinine mumbo jumbo goes, I'll voice my opinions here, there and everywhere I damn well please. If you don't like it, tough titties, pal. And Sterling Hayden is still a communist rat and a terrible actor!

Name: ray parsons Subject: sterling hayden death -- Apr 29, 2003 at 7:23PM I seem to recall reading that Sterling Hayden was terrified at the thought of dying. Trying to escape the inescapible, he fled to Australia and drowned in a remote river. Any truth to this?

Name: Charles Regain Subject: Non-sequitur editors remark -- Mar 15, 2003 at 2:57PM I do think Sterling Hayden was a fascinating fellow, which is why I have read WANDERER five times! I also think that merely being in New York City at the time of the 9-11 mass homocide does not qualify as surviving a terrorist attack, this is stupid hyperbole and claiming more experience than reality on part of the editors, and grossly unfair to the families who lost loved ones in the tragedy and actual survivors! Also, Sterling Hayden's credible screen performances are undoubtably a result of the real life experiences he acquired on fishing schooners and in interesting military service with the O.S.S. (i.e. CIA). I think he regretted having been duped into joining the communist party more than joyfully cooperating with Senator McCarthy and the HUAC. Regardless of what you think, Sterling Hayden's broad life experiences make all this chatter relevant. The more I read WANDERER, the more I admire this man's almost mystical journey through life. He put himself out to experience unique life experiences which the normal human being would miss. This gave Sterling Hayden an almost priestly insight into life which he alluded in his autobiography. Sterling Hayden never laid claim to an experience in which he did not participate!

Regain could have read the info on Hayden's war record Catherine supplied the website and learned from it. Instead, we are subjected to Regain's ravings about communism, Marines, Bush, and now, 9/11/01. Please stop this stuff and return to the subject of Mr Hayden's life and career. Both LeisureSuit Editors live and work in New York City. Were you there on 9/11/01?
Name: Charles Regain Subject: The editor's remark -- Mar 14, 2003 at 6:34PM Did the editor actually survive an al-Qaeda attack, or is he just feeling someone else's pain? Is the editor talking about an Anthrax attack or being in the Pentagon or the twin towers? Its not a claim to make lightly!

I'll work on getting the presidency. Stupid me, I was going to try to get elected ... thank you for reminding me that presidents are "appointed" now.
Name: K. Walker Subject: The Hayden Rule! -- Mar 14, 2003 at 3:09PM The Hayden Rule of non-hypocrisy, is for all the non-Hollywood types to go out and experience first hand an al-Quaida terrorist attack, and if they unfortunately survive, then get themselves appointed as President of the United States and make some extremely tough 'Realpolitik' decisions based on the mass murder of over 3,000 of your innocent fellow Americans. (Please no dick-breath Chomsky style crude conspiracy theories). Based on opinions found in 'WANDERER' if Captain Hayden were alive today, he would back up President Bush a hundred percent, just like he cooperated with the H.U.A.C. one hundred percent.
Name: The Editors Respond Subject: Re: Anti-schmuck! -- Mar 14, 2003 at 11:33AM > And any Hollywood > actor who criticises > President Bush is a > supreme schmuck! Can the rest of us criticize President Dickhead? What's the rule for us non-Hollywood types?
Name: K. Walker Subject: Anti-schmuck! -- Mar 14, 2003 at 11:25AM The only schmucks were the morons who joined the CPUSA (communist party of the USA)and stayed members. Sterling Hayden, through his testimony, removed many schmucks from Hollywood, and that was a good thing. Anybody who defends communism is a royal schmuck! And any Hollywood actor who criticises President Bush is a supreme schmuck! Get the message?
Name: Kristoffer Infante Subject: Hayden -- Mar 13, 2003 at 4:40PM He's still a shmuck!
Name: Charles Regain Subject: McCarthy & Hayden 'FOREVER' -- Mar 10, 2003 at 8:25PM Sterling Hayden fought with the partisans in Yugoslavia because that was what the Marine Corp. assigned him to do! The communists in Yugoslavia were fighting against the NAZIS and the communists in China were fighting against IMPERIAL JAPAN; so the United States sent agents to both theaters to cooperate with the commies; both Chou En Lai and Tito were once allies of the United States. Sterling Hayden never stopped being a Marine (there is no such thing as an 'Ex' Marine!) and he never stopped cooperating with the Federal government: either in an active duty capacity or as a civilian actor. He was disillusioned with the economic determinism of Communism, it didn't set well with his free spirited approach to life. Sterling Hayden publically regretted cooperating with the H.U.A.C. but privately celebrated his contribution to ferreting out a lot of commie Hollywood ratfink actors. He should do the same thing today to all the anti-war/pro-terrori st Hollywood actors promoting defeatism on national T.V.
Name: Catherine Subject: Hayden -- Mar 9, 2003 at 3:27PM You don't know what you are talking about! Capt. Hayden fought with the Partisans in Yugoslavia and won the silver star for bravery. He regretted cooperating with H.U.A.C.until the day he died. He also would never be a rat fink again.Dream on if you believe he did it willingly or gladly as you erroneously state.
Name: Charles Regain Subject: H.U.A.C. Hero -- Mar 4, 2003 at 8:12PM In my opinion, Captain Sterling Hayden, as a member of the nascent O.S.S., only joined the communist party in 1946 for the purpose of infiltration to identify actual leaders, both in Europe and in Hollywood. In my view, Sterling Hayden willingly and gladly cooperated with the FBI to ferret out the commie rats in Hollywood. The sleazy history of commie espionage in the U.S., as fully revealed in the "Verona Decrypts", demonstrated that communism was really a threat to all Western Democracies; and the American response to a very real commie threat was both the McCarthy hearings and FBI surveilance. Sterling Hayden gained my respect for his productive cooperation in the H.U.A.C.; and I am not aware of the lives or careers of 'innocent people' being ruined by Senator Joe McCarthy or the H.U.A.C.! There is a big difference between free speech (no matter how irresponsible) and actual membership or activity in dangerous and subversive organizations like the communist party in the 1950s, or the al-Quaida today! Again, if only Captain Sterling Hayden were around in the 21st century so he could infiltrate Hollywood and identify any actors who belong to al-Quaida versus holding irresponsible opinions against the war on terrorism in Iraq, and hopefully, North Korea. Sterling Hayden was an anti-cultist!!
Name: Reg Hick Subject: Books -- Mar 3, 2003 at 12:44AM Regarding the book "Boot" that Andrew mentioned. It's author is Gilbert P. Bailey and it was published by the Macmillan Co. in 1944. I purchased my copy a couple of years ago through an antiquarian book shop. Another old and fine book is "Sailing to See" by Capt. and Mrs. Irving Johnson and published by WW Norton & Co. in 1939. Sterling was 1st Mate on the schooner "Yankee" and there are some wonderful photos of him included in the well written travel book. A MUST for those who wish to know more about Hayden's life.
Name: Stan Owens Subject: Un-American activities era -- Feb 27, 2003 at 9:51AM It might help to have a little perspective on this time in history regarding Hayden. He himself had attended Communist party meetings for about six months in 1946 after having fought with Tito's Communist forces against the Germans in the war, and had friends in the party. Realizing the party had nothing to offer to anyone in the U.S., he stopped going. In 1951 was forced into testifing as a ' friendly witness' by the FBI for having been involved. McCarthy was denounced by congress for his shameful actions that ruined the lives of many innocent people. McCarthy may have had the right idea, but went way over the top. Sterling said many times in his life that the one thing he regretted in his life, was his testimony for HUAC, it haunted him his whole life. Of course Communism is totaly wrong, but this era in history is known as a time when many people on both sides made big mistakes!
Name: Charles Regain Subject: Bully for Cap'n Hayden! -- Feb 26, 2003 at 7:59PM One can only admire Capt. Sterling Hayden for fully cooperating with the House Un-American Activities Committee in helping the great American icon, Senator Joe McCarthy (and Richard Nixon) in flushing out the filthy reds in American society! The inciteful Elia Kazan was denounced by his fellow travellers for his truthful testimony against communist subterfuge in the film industry; and the wise Sterling Hayden aided that process by naming names and bouncing a lot of filthy reds out of the business. If only Capt. Hayden were alive today so he could do the exact same thing to any subversive un-American al-Quida members lurking in the internet industry (or again in Hollywood)! Captain Sterling Hayden deserves a posthumous American Citizen Medal of Honor for his part in booting out a lot of Marxist cultists from Hollywood!!!

Name: D. Thomas Subject: Alcohol abuse -- Feb 21, 2003 at 8:46AM As with many people who pick up a drink, a bond is formed with the drink. Sterling didn't drink until he was about 22, but at this time was in the world of drinking, hard living sailors life, then Hollywood. There were unsettled aspects of his life, was a restless, driven person and the drink just fit in. As with most who enjoy it, as the years go by, it just progresses, then your trapped. Like many of us who end up in this position, we can see no way to live life with out booze, being psychologicaly, physically crippled. Hayden, being so well known and in his later years having the image of the hard living sailor, writer made matters worse. He did spend a fair amount of time later in his life not drinking, but did fall back into it. Like anyone in this position, one has to reshape the way we think and conduct our life. I myself stopped in 1977 and I certainly enjoy life much more then the 25 years I drank, allows me to be present or my own life!
Name: K. Walker Subject: Alcohol Abuse -- Feb 20, 2003 at 8:50PM To Mr. D. Thomas - Thank you for your prompt response. Do you, or anyone else, know what brought on the onset of Mr. Hayden's alcoholism? In his autobiography, he makes no mention of heavy drinking until after well over the age of twenty-five, then all of a sudden, Mr. Hayden has a serious drinking problem. Why? There's no mention of abnormal alcohol abuse in his youth in his autobiography, Wanderer, why or how or when did he addict himself to alcohol? Something was definately eating him in his adult life. Are his psychiatric transcripts available for publication? Thanks. -from Boston-

If by any chance you have any photos of Christian Rub, I would really appreciate the opportunity to see them. And if there is any way I might be able to reimburse you to have copies made, it would make a really special father's day gift for my Dad. Regrettably, my father no longer has any photos of Rub. Made contact with Bill Donovan of he OSS, He and two others were selected for secret service. His assignment was to set up a base of operations near Bari, Italy. Took command of 400 Yugoslav partisans, 22 ships. Their mission: to transport suplies across the Adriatic sea against the Germnan blockade to Tito's Guerrillas who were in a fierce battle against the Nazi's. In Dec. 43, he and two others parachuted behind enemy lines in Yugoslavia and led several downed Allied aviators to safty in Italy, for this, he was awarded the silver star. Other medals he recieved were the WWII Victory medal, two bronze stars, a bronze arrowhead. Also the Yugoslav Order of Merit. He spent the summer of '45 making bomb-damage assesments of ports in Germany. He left the Marine's in Dec. '45 as a Captain, stayed in the reserves until 1948. When I was growing up, he used to say in a light hearted way "the Army and Navy may not know what they're doing, but the Marine Corps sure as hell knows what they're doing" ! My husband and I have both always liked your father as an actor so it's interesting to think he may have lived here at one point. The house we bought is a small shingled house on Alexander Ave (by Park Terrace) in Upper Montclair that probably dates back to the early 1900s so I suppose it's very likely the previous owner was correct. Thanks again for responding. I'm not sure how similar the house is now to how it was in the 20s, but if you're ever in New Jersey, you're more than welcome to stop by. :) -Lisa

Name: Tom Williams Subject: Minor Hayden Movie -- Dec 24, 2002 at 9:54AM I remember once seeing a film where Sterling played a pilot on a DC-3 where the plane crash-landed in a jungle. There, the crew and passengers had to make the choice of which 5 people flew out on the damaged plane, and which 3 would be left behind. Nehemiah Persoff was also in the picture, and played one of the three who stayed behind. He was a "bad" guy who had no apparent good qualities, but showed up to be a hero in that he agreed to stay behind and kill the other two people and then be tortured to death by the local natives. Anyone there who can tell me the name of the picture? And if it may be available anywhere? It was a remake of a movie done in the 40's with a very young Lucille Ball starring as one of the passengers....

Name: Kurt Welsch Subject: Hayden's benchmark role -- Nov 6, 2002 at 9:15AM In regards to the 'Asphalt Jungle' comments; the role of dix in this movie marked a real change in the charactors Hayden played, prior to 1950, he was cast in fluff type roles with no real identidy. Sterling was comfortable in the heavy roles, and this is what he is remembered for today; films like 'The killing', 'Dr. Strangelove' in addition to about 25 action pictures done in the 1950's. Even in one of his last movies, '9 to 5' in 1980, playing the no nonsense chairman at the end of the movie. In an interview may years ago, Sterling said "playing Dix was one of the few roles I enjoyed, a guy who just wants to get the hell out of the mess he's in" When the director of 'Asphalt Jungle', John Huston learned of Sterling's death in 1986, he remarked "Sterling Hayden had a great soaring spirit-truly a king among men."

Name: Mark King Subject: Hayden/Strangelove -- Oct 24, 2002 at 6:33PM Between 1958-68 Sterling made only one movie, but he could not have picked a more powerful film to do. It was of course Stanley Kubrick's DR. STRANGELOVE which was humorous yet a scathing and timely indictment of the military and the cold war nuclear arms race. The movie is a comedy about the destuction of civilization ! When it was released in 1964, the public laughed, but then wondered what they were laughing at because it seemed so possible that a general could go mad (Sterling) and start a nuclear war. It did well in the theaters and is a cult classic today. Sterling plays general Ripper, and has perhaps the scariest role in the film because of his strong resemblance to real life SAC commander Thomas S. Power, who during the Kennedy administration had command over the nuclear force of the US. Hayden is great in this movie, a movie that has now been voted one of the 100 most important movies ever made!

This website is wonderful! May I be so forward as to ask about the children and their (now) adult lives? Just some basic info because of their desire for privacy is respected. I was fortunate to purchase a hardbound copy of the book WANDERER and was deeply moved by Sterling penning his life, warts and all. The novel VOYAGE is (at this very moment) winging its way to me as another purchase via the Internet. And, my bid on e-Bay "won" a VHS of Johnny Guitar for a tiny sum of $1.82 + S&H of $2.95! While on the subject of the movie Johnny Guitar, years ago I was fortunate to purchase a paperback copy of the book by Roy Chanslor. It is an original .25 cent Pocket Book edition published in July, 1954. The book is dedicated to Joan Crawford -- plus, Ms Crawford wrote a commentary on the fly sheet. It's kinda worn, but still a treasure to me! I have enjoyed reading the posted messages from the "fans" of Sterling Hayden. I hope the site will continue to be a meeting place of sorts for those who wish to know more about this man who lived, loved and left lasting impressions on all of us in one way or another. One more item: On Friday, October 18, 2002 TCM, a k a Turner Classic Movies, is a showing of SUDDENLY at 12:30 p.m. CMT. Check your local listings for your time slot. Thank you for letting me Yak! ~Jeanne

Name: Chris Robinson Subject: The ring -- Oct 8, 2002 at 10:59AM I'm answering on behalf of Betty Hayden about the pinkie ring Hayden wore in So Big. Here is her response: "There was a question from someone about the ring Sterling wore in "So Big". yes, it was my ring he wore in the film." Chris Robinson Ottawa, canada
Name: Jeanne Sockwell McRorey Subject: Thank You for Website! -- Sep 28, 2002 at 12:44AM I am so pleased to find so many people are still infatuated with Sterling Hayden! He captured my heart from my first viewing of Bahama Passage when I was in 8th grade. My Mother would even let me "be sick" on the day BP was on the morning movie! As I got older and I continued following Sterling's movie career, others became favorites, i.e. JOHNNY GUITAR (He could buckle my belt anytime!), SO BIG (He'd have chosen my basket!)to his cameo in 9 to 5. Thank you all for sharing your feelings toward this man who touched so many lives even beyond the grave. . .uh, Bay. Sterling, I wish I'd known ya! One question: The pinkie ring Sterling wore in SO BIG --was it a personal piece of jewelry or (in the movie plot) his first wife's wedding band? Trivial, yes, but something I've wondered about. Anybody know? To the family, I extend a warm "Hello from Texas" and best wishes in your lives. To all would-be wanderers, I say "Hail!"
Name: Curtis Price Subject: FAN CLUB? -- Sep 25, 2002 at 10:15PM Someone has mentioned a Hayden fan club? Does one actually exist? I am far too young to As much as I liked Hayden in his noir films, I must say I return to "Wanderer" quite often. There is an honesty and directness that still resonates today; this was a man of independence in mind and integrity. I don't think many are made like this anymore. For anyone who is looking for used copies of "Wanderer" or "Voyager", try www.bookfinder.c om

Name: Barbara Subject: The Wharf Rat Magazine -- Sep 16, 2002 at 6:35PM I found a book, T Wharf, copyright 1952, signed by Bill Hauk and presented by The Wharf Rat Magazine, copy 348 of 500. Alden-Hauk informed my Sterling Hayden was a member and his name is listed as giving advice and assistance. Would this book be of value or interest to the Sterling Hayden Fan Club? This is a very interesting book of Bostons Wharf's with pictures and original sketches. Thank you. Barbara
Name: Martha Subject: Bahama Passage -- Sep 7, 2002 at 3:00PM Would love to see Bahama Passage as part was filmed at my great Uncle's home "Crows Nest" on Harbor Island, Bahamas. There are also others in family looking for a copy
Name: Mark Subject: S H Exhibit -- Aug 19, 2002 at 8:37AM It looks like Sept. is the final month for the Hayden exhibit 'Temest tossed' at Boston University, Mugar Library. It's really a great display with several hundred items, movie, sailing, war, many personal letters, etc. It's worth the trip to Boston!
Name: Tyler Subject: Bahama Passage -- Aug 7, 2002 at 7:15AM Jeff, As far as I know, Paramount Pictures has not put Bahama Passage on cassette, you may have to record it of of late night TV. This is the movie that launched 24 year old Hayden's career in '41...though it was his second movie. Also his last for about six years ( The Marine's and WWII filling his time). Sterling's character was noticeably hardened after the war. Bahama Passage was so light and airy..happy, a far cry from the likes of 'Asphalt jungle' in 1950. It's amazing how hard it is to find a copy of BP!
Name: Jeff L. Subject: Bahama Passage -- Jul 27, 2002 at 12:29PM I am looking for a copy of Bahama Passage. Please e-mail @ Warrior25@msn.com.

Name: Maggie C. Subject: Tomorrow Show -- Jul 22, 2002 at 1:54PM I too would like to buy a copy of that taped interview. Let me know if this is possible. My e-mail is mchrisman@cox.net Thanks.
Name: Steve Morris Subject: Tomorrow show -- Jun 28, 2002 at 7:25AM Note on the Snyder interview, Hayden did the show sober and he and Tom had a very good interview. Afterwards they stayed up most of the night talking and drinking. Sterling was scheduled to do the Stanley Siegal show early the following morning, which he did a little worse for wear. A noticable difference in these shows, this reflects the way Hayden lived at the time, (the seas could get rough). Was doing promotion for his epic best selling novel 'Voyage'. He had an unforgetable presence!
Name: Jody Subject: Tomorrow Show Interview -- Jun 27, 2002 at 2:06AM Gayle...I would love to have a copy of that Tomorrow Show interview. I, too, saw it in '77 and the only reason I didn't record it was because I didn't have a blank cassette! That was one of the major mistakes of my life! Please email me: jpg22@cox-internet.c om Thank you.
Name: Gayle Subject: Movie -- Jun 26, 2002 at 12:58PM Former L.A. pitcher and now Cleveland Indians pitcher Chuck Finley has as amazing resemblance to Mr.Hayden.Mom agrees and she has been a Hayden admirer since Bahama Passage. I have been since his Tom Snyder "Tomorrow Show" appearance in 77.I have an audio cassette I made of that interview. One of Mom's regrets of her life is having been very ill with the flu and missing his appearance at an autograph session for Wanderer when it first came out. Mom was a beautiful Ginger Rogers type and I sure wish they had met!
Name: Chris Robinson Subject: movie -- Jun 23, 2002 at 6:11PM Tim...I did speak with Kitty Hayden a week ago and she mentioned someone working on a film. I know one actor who would be perfect at capturing Hayden's delivery and tone and that's Martin Donovan who some of you might know from Hal Hartley's films like Trust, Amateur and Simple Men. But I don't think he's got the build...but who knows. Anyway...I've always thought that Donovan came from the Hayden school of acting.
Name: Tim K. Subject: Hayden Movie -- Jun 13, 2002 at 7:25AM I've heard that someone in New York is working on a film version of Hayden's autobiography 'Wanderer', if this is true, it will be an amazing film. Finding someone for Sterling's role will be difficult to say the least!
Name: shelley Subject: Timberjack -- Jun 3, 2002 at 10:43PM desperately trying to get a copy of the movie "Timberjack&quo t; starring Sterling Hayden for my father for Father's Day (obviously the clock is ticking). So far, it seems as if a bootleg copy may be the only way so thought you might help. Thank you in advance.

Name: Ted Shell Subject: thank you -- May 27, 2002 at 9:32AM Thank you Mr. Stevens fo the information about his cremation.
Name: Jon Stevens Subject: Not about us -- May 25, 2002 at 7:49AM This site is not about me, Mike or Ted, it's about Hayden and his work. We'll all be better off if we keep it to that. There is no grave site, he was cremated, ashes scattered in San Francisco Bay. Now, about his work, some of his best camera work was 'Playhouse 90' live TV done in 1960, 'Beat of a Different Drummer' and 'Ethan Phrome'. Doing live TV plays was among the most difficult kind of acting to do, Sterling did a fantastic job of it.
Name: Mike Subject: Go to hell -- May 21, 2002 at 4:14PM Go to hell, Ted!
Name: Ted Shell Subject: Grave -- May 20, 2002 at 9:17AM Does anyone know where Sterling Hayden laid to rest?
Name: Greg Foster Subject: Off Shore article -- May 20, 2002 at 7:21AM Nice article on Hayden in the May issue of 'Off Shore' magazine. He had quite an impact on the sailing world before Hollywood, left home for the sea at 15, skipper by 21 with several around the world voyages, took command of 14 sailing vessals during the war. Sterling covered a lot of ground in his life. 'Asphalt Jungle' has to be one of his all time great films, the caracter 'Dix' is not to be messed with, wow..intense!
Name: Lucy Subject: Tossed Salad -- May 17, 2002 at 1:53PM I'd like him to toss my salad!
Name: Tim Hull Subject: S H Exhibit -- Apr 17, 2002 at 8:20AM Due to public response, the Sterling Hayden exhibit - 'Tempest Tossed' at Boston University has been extended through the summer. The Speacial Collections Dept. was amazed at the response to this exhibit, apparantly people have traveled great distances to see it. Hayden seems to have become a cultural icon of restless souls of the 20th century. It's a very interesting, includes many personal items in BU's 'Special Collections' from his family. His writing is fantastic, (many letters displayed). He was an intriguing man, with many dimentions!
Name: Kristoffer Infante Subject: He's a boring, wooden actor -- Apr 10, 2002 at 3:46PM He make Charlton Heston look like Laurence Olivier! LOL!
Name: cameron comee Subject: sterling hayden -- Apr 4, 2002 at 4:17PM my father fred. t.comee grew up in Provincetown, MA and was a childhood friend of sterling's. they sailed together and carried on. unfortunately, my father has passed and took some of the stories with him. he did say that the two of them had adventures. my family moved to the sf bay area in 1959 and sterling's boat the wanderer was moored in sausalito. a beautiful schooner, as i recal. any way, nice to here the name again.
Name: David Geller Subject: Christian Hayden -- Mar 26, 2002 at 4:53AM I'm looking for Christian, as I knew him in high school. Please let me know how to get a hold of him.
Name: Max Card Subject: Hayden Exhibit at Boston U -- Mar 9, 2002 at 12:36AM I visited the exhibit at Boston U and suggest other fans of Hayden also do so. I was pleased to learn more of the realities of the man's life. Thanks to the family and the university for making the exhibit available.
Name: Sturmey Archer Subject: Doug: uncalled for -- Mar 3, 2002 at 6:34PM Doug, I read Ed's posting and all i can say is that YOU seem to be the one projecting. Nowhere does Ed suggest that the 'raging romantic' and identity confusion was an result of repressed homosexuality..and so what if he DID say it? Your aggressive and unwarranted attack suggests that perhaps you've got your own identity issues to resolve.
Name: doug w Subject: Ed Gibson: Hayden's Psychology -- Mar 3, 2002 at 10:24AM I'm new to this site and was very pleased to find it. I take exception to Ed's comment that Hayden was a "raging romantic" and "confused about his identity" and also his inference about what SH chose to keep from us in his writing--why is it that gays always need to find validation by projecting their homosexuality onto heterosexual men? Cant these a-holes just just accept that not all men are like them? Hayden may have been confused and confounded by many things-but not about that. If Ed read "Wanderer" he'd know that Hayden was confronted with homosexuality at a young age and chose not to explore it---Get a life dickhead Ed.
Name: Larry Jenkins Subject: Acting; phase II -- Feb 28, 2002 at 8:00AM Hayden's acting stopped for 10 years from 1958-68, with the exception of Dr. Strangelove in '63. The second phase of his film career began in 1968 when he shot 'Hard Contract' in Europe with James Coburn. Sterling now begins the elder statesman tough guy period, playing a retired hit man who tries to teach Coburn that he just doesn't have to kill, and that he had found peace with himself having left behind the underworld. It's an odd but interesting movie and Hayden's power still comes across, though it's mellowed. The movie also has actors, Burgess Merideth and Lee Remick, It's a classic that many are not familiar with.
Name: Gus Lopes Subject: Movie-Unchain Melody -- Feb 22, 2002 at 10:26PM Did Hayden star in a movie as a convict that has the song Unchain Melody?? If so what was the title of the Movie.. I remember some time in the late fifty seeing an actor that resemble or is Mr. Hayden.
Name: Jake Stevens Subject: No need to act. -- Feb 17, 2002 at 12:49PM Most know that Hayden did not consider himself a serious actor, and he did make many pot boilers. What came across on the screen was a real life intensity. Many of the 'tough guy' actors hadn't experienced the harsh realities of war as Hayden had, being a Marine attatched to the OSS as a commando during the War, recieving sevveral medals including the Silver Star. Acting is trying to capture reality, and this is why great film makers wanted him, (Huston, Kubrick, Altman). Even in one of his last movies, 9 To 5, when he was almost 70 years old, you get the feeling he is not a guy to mess with, and if you do, you'll wish you hadn't!
Name: Chris Robinson Subject: Who else? -- Feb 9, 2002 at 9:57AM Hi. I'm writing a feature article on Hayden for a magazine called Chunklet. I'd love to get some family/friends input so that I dont much up the truth (facts are another thing of course). Please email at: robinson@ottawa. com if you're willing to say a few things. Regards, Chris Robinson Ottawa, Canada
Name: Stieg Ziegler Subject: Hayden's rare films; -- Jan 23, 2002 at 9:23AM Not many have seen this one, 'SWEET HUNTERS', shot in Brittany in 1969. Sterling plays a rather intimidating zooligist out in the middle of nowhere with his family, it's the only movie he made with his son Andrew, who plays the part in the movie. Includes American actors, Stuart Whitman, Susan Strasberg. Whitman plays an escaped convict that the family finds dead one day, this movie is an odd one, but intriguing with foggy scenes that create an anxious tension throughout. You may have to go to Europe to find a copy of this scarce movie.
Name: The Editors Respond Subject: Re: Shama Lama Ding Dong -- Jan 22, 2002 at 10:27PM If Winter Kills came out in 1983, how come we first saw in in '79? There was a 1983 reissue ... maybe you're thinking of that? Research before you criticize, son.
Name: Jack D. Ripper Subject: Shama Lama Ding Dong -- Jan 22, 2002 at 9:56PM By the way, the editors of this website are wrong. The last Hayden film was Winter Kills made in 1983. The editors should be ashamed of themselves and I suggest that they undergo RETROPUBIC PROSTATECTOMY WITH BILATERAL LYMPHADENECTOMY!!! Long live Hayden and the movie The Whoppie Boys, which he had nothing to do with!!
Name: Jack D. Ripper Subject: Strange Love -- Jan 22, 2002 at 9:47PM Hayden was one of the only genuinely cool actors of all time. F John Wayne, F Steve frickin Mc(drag)Queen and F Clint Eastwood. Long live Chaluppas and Hayden!!! REVENGA!!!!!
Name: Art Hill Subject: Hayden books -- Jan 5, 2002 at 11:45AM To all interested in Hayden....Bothof his books are in re-print, his autobiography 'WANDERER' first published in 1963 and his best selling novel 'VOYAGE' first published in 1976. Both are newly printed by Sheridan House Inc. They're both great books-

Name: Dave Moorman Subject: The Eternal Sea -- Dec 27, 2001 at 8:50PM I was in this movie, for a second, back in 1953, 1954 or 1955 while aboard the USS Kearsarge. I would like a video of this movie. Can you help me find one?
Name: Bill Kirk Subject: Sterling Hayden friends/relatives -- Dec 19, 2001 at 5:31PM I am working on a feature article about Sterling Hayden for a boating magazine in Massachusetts. I am interested in speaking to or corresponding with friends and relatives of Sterling Hayden for the story. I can be reached at bkirk@offshoremag.ne t and would appreciate any and all correspondence! Thank you.
Name: Andrea Subject: to Mr./Mrs. Tashtigo, Jack Perkins, Buck Sanders, Dave, Maggie Chrisman, Dick Benner, Ed Gibson, Ginny -- Nov 25, 2001 at 2:48PM I think this site represents an excellent tribute to Sterling Hayden. I’d like to share with you this 1976 Hayden’ statement: “When I was younger I tried to be tough. Now I find myself seeing more, feeling more, hurting more, crying more. I’ve always grown up late. I think a lot of men begin to die when they’re in their 20s, when they make a commitment to a fixed life. I was never able to do that. I feel sometimes as though I’ve never grown up. And I like that. There are still possibilities.” Great!!! This is wisdom (=humbleness). Yeah, he was a very rich man and his richness was the result of errors, treasons, greatness, long, painful and thoughtful nights spent to cry, to smoke, to write, to think of his past & future-future & past. I esteem this man because he was a real Anti-hero. What does Anti-hero mean? Oh, it’s an hard question… well, let me explain as best I can… you ‘sing’ before the HUAC because you are weak and you aren’t able to show the guts of Howard Da Silva, Gale Sondergaard or Lionel Stander, you don’t want to end your career as Larry Parks did, so you don’t want be fired, you don’t want to lose your sons and all that jazz BUT… but you feel that your heart and your soul are bleeding and it hurts you so much. Oh yes, you know very well that if you’re continuing to work is not for your good acting. You know very well the price of your success! Years… long years dominated by inertia. A lot of movies, alcohol, sex, vacuity BUT (but, but, but: how many BUT in our life!)… but there is a Vision in front of you, an AIM to reach, maybe it can be your Salvation, to discover yourself again and… oh my goodness: this Vision is over there, Over the Blue Horizon! It’s an Island: Tahiti, your youth, the pureness of mind. 1959: the escape!!! 1959: to born again!!! Tell me: in which manner we can expiate a guilt? Just only living. It’s impossible to erase the Fault but it’s possible to erase the OLD MAN, to born again and HE DID!!! This is my idea of Anti-hero: to be the biggest enemy of the dark side of ourself, to face our past and say: “no more!”. I love this man as well as I love my late and beloved dad: they were MEN and to me it’s the most important thing… what else? Till the next time… Andrea
Name: Maggie Subject: Andrea to all of you -- Nov 21, 2001 at 7:30PM Andrea, I like your comments. I apologize for the typos in my message.
Name: Andrea Subject: to all of you -- Nov 21, 2001 at 4:20PM First of all, sorry for my bad English: I’m not American. I’m Italian, man, 34, married. I discovered this site a couple of weeks ago: it’s very interesting, especially for its subject, a real man, so complex, so… so human being! I’m Christian and I believe he’s in heaven now and his soul is a great soul because he was a unique person as well as every person is unique, of course but… but Hayden –throughout his intense life- tried to seize the SENSE of LIFE in spite of his weakness & thanks to his weakness. Tell me: what’s the book “Wanderer”? It’s a masterpiece of frankness towards life and himself, a masterpiece of introspection, a perfect analysis of this modern society (a real enemy of the Individual). In fact “the greatest enemy to truth and justice among us is the compact majority.“ (from “Wanderer”) He was an excellent sailor, a male symbol, a good OSS officer, a weak communist as well as a poor man before the HUAC, a bad & good actor (sometimes excellent), a ‘sterling’ writer, a Researcher of Humanity in every person he met. I think he understood a great thing about life: every moment is a great moment, nothing must be wasted during our strange and unknown Time!!! He was an artist, yes indeed, but… an artist because of his acting or an artist because of his writing? I don’t think, in a such way. I think he was an artist of life. Yeah: this was his real profession!!! Do you remember that old Jimmy Dean’s movie called “Rebel Without a Cause”? Well, Sterling Hayden was a “Rebel With a Cause”, a “Rebel With an AIM”. When I talk about him I don’t think of him as a sort of perfect, symbolic Iconoclast: I don’t like Mythes! I think of him like a profound an original enemy of Fashion (every kind of Fashion), Conceit, Obtuseness, Vacuity. He wasn’t a perfect man (his restlessness caused him a lot of problems with booze, grass and he suffered from a painful nervous breakdown) but he fought a good & right battle against all these stuff. On my opinion this was Sterling Hayden. So, to ‘dissert’ about his acting or his name on the Walk of Fame is silly, in a such way. I like his movies but I think it’s so inappropriate and useless to be in conflict each other on a topic that Sterling Hayden didn’t love so much as you love. If someone will add his name along the Walk of Fame… well, I think we’ll hear his disappointment from heaven, right away, you bet!!! Furthermore, I don’t think it’s very polite to attack a person because of an idea or an advice (see the answer of Mr. Kristoffer Infante to Mr. Ted Shell). It’s right to say: “NO!!!” (if you think so) but why to say: “GO TO HELL”?!. Cordially, Andrea

Name: Reg Hick Subject: Andrew Hayden:Hayden Journals -- Nov 19, 2001 at 12:42AM Andrew, Has the Hayden family ever considered publishing your dad's journals? I've been an admirer of your father since I first read "Wanderer" back in the mid-sixties and would relish any positive news on this subject.
Name: Andrew Hayden Subject: Wrong info on his name -- Nov 10, 2001 at 8:40PM The Film Festial is misinformed about his name; It was not a Hollywood phony, he was born Montaigu Relyea Walter, his godfather conviced his parents that The name Sterling was preferable (a more common name 85 years ago). Sterling's father died when he was nine. His step-father's name was Hayden so he was known as Sterling Hayden from age twelve on. In 1940-41 Hollywood did spell it Stirling with an I instead of E. To confuse matters further, he legally changed his name to John Hamilton while he served in the Marine Corps during WWII to distance himself from Hollywood. Just posting this about my father because there seems to be an amazing amount of misinformation regarding his name.
Name: Jody Garner Subject: Biography -- Nov 4, 2001 at 11:09PM Does anyone know if there are plans for "Biography" ; to do a show on Sterling Hayden? He led such a fascinating life that it would surely be a great show.
Name: Tashtigo Subject: the 'ol man -- Oct 30, 2001 at 6:10PM Hayden is truly a man for the ages. I remember him telling me more than once that he was nothing more than an imposter... Nothing could be further from the truth. He touched people to their core and the shear number of folks whose spirits rose on high because of this man was, and is, a true blessing. I for one, thank the Gods for his presence here and say to him in his own words - "Vail Wanderer"
Name: William Pearson Subject: Voyage -- Oct 29, 2001 at 6:01PM 'VOYAGE' would make a epic movie. Sterling considered this novel among his greatest accomplishments, though he maintained a sense of humor about it when he said on the Johnny Carson show back in the 70's..." if you don't like the book, it makes a hell of a doorstop!" This is big book at some 700 pages.
Name: ralph hosier Subject: VOYAGE ,the movie -- Oct 28, 2001 at 11:03AM Why in the world has no one made a movie from the great novel"VOYAGE&qu ot;?If only i were a billionare,i would not only make the book a film,it would become a classic.
Name: l. pagni Subject: bahama passage video -- Oct 22, 2001 at 6:14PM I too am looking for a copy of Bahama Passage. Please email me if you have any information. Thank you.
Name: Jack Perkins Subject: S.H. -- Oct 22, 2001 at 8:08AM Hayden distanced himself as far as possible from Hollywood, a place that has long been infested with Narcissist. Sterling did not consider himself a true actor in the artist sense, his stardom was a fluke, having been talked into a screen test as a dare and the studio decides to make him a star by giving him the lead in 'Bahama Passage', 1940. He simply had contempt for what Hollywood was about. He did do some interesting work in 'Playhouse 90' live TV, such as Ethan Frome and Beat of a Different Drummer. Sterling was passionet the harsh reality of real life, Grand Banks fisherman, partisans fighting for freedom in Yugoslavia during WWII, firemen, ect., these were the importnt things to him. He had lived such a hard life outside of Hollywood, that he simply could not take movies seriously, but like most of us, if asked to be in a movie for a good sum of money....we would do it! His autobiograghy 'WANDERER' gives one a true understanding of the inner conflicts he strugled with during his life, a life that very few people could live. I knew him well, and he was an intense person. Jack Perkins-
Name: Kristoffer Infante Subject: You guys -- Oct 19, 2001 at 6:33PM First off, I am a nice guy. Second, I have nothing against your father. I just can't understand why he would not like the opportunity to teach and inspire the world more with his art in films. That's why I am an actor, and a very good one at that. I mentioned Brando, Olivier, Welles, March, and Tracy because they respected acting (well, maybe not Brando). I look upon these men as my guides to leading a rich and successful career in Hollywood, which, mind you, I will do. Your father just never struck me as a very good actor in the sense of versatility. Always the same old boring tough guy roles. (Although I did like JOHNNY GUITAR.) In conclusion, I have nothing against Sterling Hayden, or his films. What I do resent is people who don't take what they have and the good that they can do with it, and make it into something positive. Remember, Andrew and Ted, I am not the enemy. I'm just a man who loves his work.
Name: Ted Shell Subject: Your dad -- Oct 16, 2001 at 10:05PM I just wanted you to know Andrew, that Mr. Brando and Larry Olivier (I have met both during my career) both discussed your fathers work with me and had nothing but good things to say about his acting. They both envied his ability to walk away from an industry that can be very fickle to say the least. By the way I have a great photograph of your dad taken at the house in Westwood village with Christian age 2. Perhaps you or Christian would like to have it? I enjoy reading all the positive comments abouty your father here on THE YAK SHACK. regards, Ted Shell
Name: Andrew S. Hayden Subject: Be Nice Kristoffer -- Oct 16, 2001 at 5:38PM My Father was often very critical of a good portion of the work he had done as an actor. The puplic and the movie industry had great demand for his inclusion in films, making over 50 movies in 40 years in addition to turning down many other roles. Don't forget that Orson Wells admired his work very much. It's not particualy nice to make disparaging remarks about a person who is no longer with us. I recommend not watching his movies if his being in them bothers you. Most important, he was a good father. Have a nice day. Sincerely, Andrew S. Hayden
Name: Kristoffer Infante Subject: The Real Actors -- Oct 14, 2001 at 2:42PM Sterling Hayden is no actor! The real actors are: Marlon Brando, Laurence Olivier, Spencer Tracy, Orson Welles, and Fredric March!

Name: TED SHELL Subject: Walk of Fame -- Sep 8, 2001 at 9:50PM I think it's a shame that Mr Hayden doesn't have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I wonder if anyone has even nominated him? I think I will! Anyone willing to help with me work to get Sterling Hayden the star he deserves!
Name: Andrew Hayden Subject: Sterling Hayden -- Aug 14, 2001 at 9:15AM He felt acting was a useless way to make a living, but they kept asking him to do films. In the 60's he did turn down many roles to do what he thought was a worthwhile eneavor, writing! Completly self taught, he never even went to high school. His second book "Voyage" was a 'book of the month club'- New York times book review'. Sterling was turned on by real life, was a sea captain by age age 22, concidered one of the worlds best deep water sailors. A Marine, and a commando with the OSS in WWII, (silver star, bronze star, and two bronze arrowheads). He could not stand phonies or bull___ters. In contrast, he had a keen sense of humor and could be very funny. As he often said- "Do it, don't talk about it". He was a very interesting father, Andrew Hayden-
Name: Buck Sanders Subject: Sterling -- Aug 5, 2001 at 3:42AM Man I love his movies! Its great to see other people respond to this rare talent. How can one see Pharos of Chaos? I live in Malibu and read that some of the Hayden family lives here. Maybe I'll run into some of them get to chat about the man.
Name: Rob Bush Subject: Different materials -- Aug 4, 2001 at 7:32PM I was wondering where I could find a copy of Wanderer and if possible, as I have read about, Pharos of Chaos. I've been impressed by Hayden since I was a kid. I remember seeing Suddenly about fifteen years ago when I was about ten or eleven years old. Since then I have found The Asphalt Jungle and The Killing to be among my favorite films and Hayden has become one of my favorite "tough guy" actors. I would like to hear from any longtime Sterling Hayden fans.

Name: Bob Subject: Sterling Hayden -- Jul 29, 2001 at 10:46PM Sterling Hayden looked much larger compared to others in the same films. How tall was he and how much did he weigh?
Name: Dave Subject: Sterling Hayden -- Jul 26, 2001 at 3:27PM I am 38 years old and read "Wanderer" in the early 1980s. The succinct writing, honesty, and candor led me to admire Sterling as a writer and human being. I'm not a big fan of movies, but I am certainly a fan of Sterling's. What a interesting guy he is -- sure wish I had the chance to meet him. Interestingly, last year I saw a beautiful yacht tied up at Saturna Island (British Columbia) named "Percy Snow." Me and the owners of the boat ended up talking for a few hours about Sterling, his writing, and of course his sailing. As far as I am concerned, I don't care if he had never made a film because his writing stands for itself.
Name: Margaret Subject: The Star -- Jul 24, 2001 at 12:13AM How could anyone overlook his work next to the incomparable Bette Davis in The Star? When I saw that movie, I knew I would dream about Sterling Hayden for the rest of my life.
Name: Ron Subject: Eternal Sea -- Jul 4, 2001 at 10:29AM I watched this movie many years ago on T.V. but now it cannot be found, I have requested it through AMC and TMC, no luck! Is there someone who knows why this film is impossible to find, I have been looking for 6 years. Hope someone has the answer. Thanks
Name: Claude Subject: Sterling Hayden -- Jun 17, 2001 at 1:57PM I enjoyed your tribute to Sterling Hayden, It was thorough and appreciative of this actor's limited talent. In fact, his only talent was his manliness. If you would compare him to Richard Widmark, the latter would be considered excellent, especially in tough man, film noir roles.
Name: Michelle Subject: Asphalt Jungle -- Jun 3, 2001 at 7:50PM I just saw this movie for a 50's culture class of mine, and loved it, especially Hayden in the role of Dix. I'm definitely going to see more of his movies!

Name: Maggie Chrisman Subject: Dick Benner sermon -- Nov 29, 2000 at 4:38PM Thanks for confirming that Simon Harwar and Sterling Hayden are the same. I could not imagine how Hayden could write so eloquently of Harwar's demons without being alcoholic himself. Thanks so much for sharing your experience of being with Sterling Hayden. There is so much to admire in this man.
Name: Dick Benner Subject: Sterling Hayden sermon -- Nov 28, 2000 at 9:24AM My sermon,"The Answer Lies in Choice:Lessons of Life and Faith Learned from My Friend, Sterling Hayden" is available at www.firstuuomaha.org.Go to the minister's page and click recent sermons.
Name: Gene Casey Subject: Sterling in the Marines -- Nov 7, 2000 at 2:27AM My dad and Mr. Hayden were in the same outift in the Marines, stationed in So. Carolina. (I have a nice glossy b&w "camp picture.") Years later, my father bumped into Hayden at Grand Central Station (late 60s). After a brief introduction, my father asked him how he was doing. "Ah," replied Hayden, with a wave of the hand. "I'm all f--ked up!" Then he was off!
Name: Ed Gibson Subject: Hayden's psychology -- Oct 31, 2000 at 12:51PM His book, "Wanderer", fascinates me. Beyond the story of his remarkable life, his writing is also remarkable in what he chose to tell us and what he chose to keep from us. I conclude that he was heavily stressed emtionally (a raging "romantic") and perhaps was confused about his self-identity (which is remarkable considering his physical size and "beauty" along with his hard, real life years as a sailor. Altogether a fascinating personality who even now reaches out to affect people who take the trouble to study his life. Are there others who view him as a mid-century icon, both good and "bad"? A new admirer, Ed.
Name: John Bourdage Subject: Catherine Hayden -- Oct 28, 2000 at 7:01AM Would love to get in touch with you and your family, Catherine, about the Yahoo fan club on your husband and the subsequent website planned on him and his books and career. We're a couple of guys who have alot of respect for him and our goal is to show him the honor he so richly deserves.
Name: John Bourdage Subject: Sterling Hayden -- Oct 28, 2000 at 6:52AM Sterling Hayden had brass ones! Here's a fella who went out and did whatever he wanted to do. He loved the sea and wrote about his experiences out at sea. He was a great actor although highly underated. After washing out as a British Commando, he joined the U.S. Marines and then the O.S.S. and fought behind the lines with the underground. Definately a fella you'd want on your side! I've admired him for 40 years and I'm happy to see his books reissued. So much so that an e-mail penpal and I started a fan club in the Yahoo clubs section.
Name: Rudolph McCommbs Subject: SH in PA -- Oct 2, 2000 at 7:55PM Last week at the Sodomistic rituals in Lancaster, I happened to come across SH's personal tent. Name: Maggie Chrisman Subject: "Voyage" -- Oct 1, 2000 at 10:44PM Catherine, Re-read my 1964 autographed copy of "Wanderer" which led me to reading "Voyage a Novel of 1896." In light of Sterling Hayden's shortened formal education, where in the world did he aquire such a stunning vocabulary? What an amazing man!
Name: dick benner Subject: Voyage, not Wanderer -- Sep 5, 2000 at 2:34PM Catherine, I realized I had referred to the wrong book soon after I posted my message. It was Voyage, the first book I read by your husband. He was kind enough to inscribe my paperback copy. He told me of renting a Ryder truck to bring a Norfolk pine back to Sausalito. Before I went on a sabbatical in Switzerland I spoke to him on the phone and he was kind enough to mention that if his barge was "in commission" I could have used it as a home base.I spent a memorable two hours that sunlit October afternoon. All the best.
Name: Catherine Hayden Subject: Sterling Hayden -- Sep 3, 2000 at 1:29PM I was reading some of your correspondence about Sterling and thought I'd answer some questions and correct some erroneous information. I am Sterling's widow and we were married for 26 years until his death in 1986. To dick benner....he says he met Sterling while at the Tudor Hotel. That could well be, but "Wanderer" was not written there. It was written in Tiboron, CA where Sterling had an office and was finished on Nantucket where we spent the winter of 61-62. To Jody Garner....one cannot get a print of "Pharos of Chaos". It was filmed in France by some German film-makers. To Tony Seidel..."The Eternal Sea" has not been made into a video. To "Anna".... No, Sterling is not alive. He died in Sausalito in 1986.
Name: Bryan Blagg Subject: Mr Hayden's book -- Aug 25, 2000 at 3:18AM I was given a book by a friend to read. She told me it was about a ship. The Wanderer was the book. I have almost finished this wonderful book. It gives such great insight into Sterling. He was an amazing man. I had no idea who Sterling Hayden was before this book. I am now going to find his other book to read. If you like Sterlings movies The Wanderer is a must read for you.
Name: GINNY Subject: Sterling Hayden's Family -- Aug 22, 2000 at 4:30PM My daughter goes to a Christian youth group in Malibu. The family that takes her is the Hayden family. I didn't realize until a year had gone by that the lady that was driving the van and such a wonderful friend was the daughter-in-law of Sterling Hayden. She is married to one of his sons. I always knew that he looked like someone, but could never figure out who. Let me just say they are the most wonderful, Christian family and they have nine children..some grown. Great family. I thought I would share that. I was a fan of Mr. Hayden and I love to see the pictures they have of that era.

Box,com or sea-room.com but I come up with zilch.
Name: Robert Wright Subject: Altman work -- Aug 5, 2000 at 7:22PM I have been a fan of Hayden over the years, and recall his running against the Hollywood crowd, perhaps rooted in his open testimony in the days of blackballing. I take exception to the Altman comment--as Maltin says, Thieves Like Us gets better with every viewing.
